Water Filter Treatment

Remove filter carbon during treatment for fish?

So, i got a treatment for my gold fishes cause they apparently have ICH..

the medication i am using say's remove filter carbon, ( i am a fish newbie) i assume the carbon filtration is the box that blows our oxygen in the fish tank.

Anywho, i don't understand why i have to remove it. the medicine turns the water green as well, should i leave it, if so how long or how much should times a week should i change the water when the medicine says to medicate for 7 days.

!!

No, the carbon is the stuff that looks like small black rocks. Some filter pads have it contained inside the filter pad-in between the plastic piece and the fiber. If you shake it, you'll hear it rattle. If that's the case, just cut it and remove it and return the filter pad to the filter.
Otherwise, some people put carbon in a separate bag. Me personally, I don't recommend using it on a regular basis. It's really only needed when it's time to remove medications from your tank. Carbon absorbs certain chemicals and such from the water.

Also, carbon is only considered active or effective for a short time-I've heard a few days to 2 weeks. But, I would still remove it if you have it to be on the safe side.

For the meds, follow the directions on the bottle. I know this is also confusing, but follow the treatment for at least 4-5 days until after the last spot falls off the fish. Ich has 3 life stages, and it's only killed off during it's free swimming life stage. Depending on the temperature in the tank will determine how quickly they move through those life stages. However, with certain meds, you do not want to increase the temp in the tank. Here's a few links to read over with lots of info on what ich is, causes, and different treatment ideas:

Why Have a Drinking Water Filter System in the Home?

Why buy a drinking water filter system when you can just buy bottled?  Well, if you are in the business of bottled waters, then you probably want people to buy from you.  It is one of the fastest growing industries in the world and one of the most profitable.

All you have to do is get some plastic bottles, some kind of drinking water filter system and you’re in business.  People spend millions of dollars each week on those bottles.  It’s no wonder that more and more companies are getting into the game.

You may think that the liquid in those bottles comes from a pristine mountain spring or at least a protected underground well of proven purity.  But, the truth is that it comes from a tap, somewhere.  Only a very small percentage of bottled waters comes from a spring or a well.

Of course, they probably run it through a drinking water filter system, but the quality that they use cannot be determined.  The Federal regulations that govern quality only apply if it is transported across state lines, and then it is only required to be "as good as", not better than what comes out of your tap.

One source says that they usually avoid crossing state lines to avoid Federal purity standards, which aren’t that great. If you read your annual water-quality report, you know that it isn’t safe to drink unless you have your own drinking water filter system.  But, you probably thought that bottled was better.  I did too, until I did the research.

There are no assurances or requirements that bottled waters are safer or better than what comes from the tap.  Federal authorities say that companies that promote bottled as being safer “are defrauding the American public."  A quality drinking water filter system is really the only safe choice.

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) did the research about the source of most bottled waters and the companies that bottle and sell in the same state, to avoid testing.  Their conclusion was that "bottled water companies have used this loophole to avoid complying with basic health standards."  The research group also found that the FDA’s standards for bottled waters are even weaker than the EPA’s standards for public treatment facilities.

Below, I have included some examples of why a drinking water filter system is safer than buying bottled.

Treatment facilities must test for E. coli bacteria, if any trace is found then measures must be taken before it can be sent to customers. FDA rules for bottled say that a certain amount of the bacteria is okay.

The type of drinking water filter system that a company uses is not specified by federal regulations.  In fact, they don’t have to use one at all.

Treatment facilities must test for Cryptosporidium or Giardia, two common waterborne pathogens, that can cause diarrhea and other intestinal problems.  Companies that sell bottled are not required to do so.

There are many other reasons that a drinking water filter system is better than buying bottled waters, including money saved and less trash in our landfills.  But, the biggest reason is that you can get something safer and better tasting in your own kitchen.  You just have to buy one high quality drinking water filter system instead of hundreds of bottles.
