Central heating pumping over into expansion tank?

hot water runs continuously into expansion tank when heating is on. Think it has always done this since we moved in, but didn't realise it was a fault! I did replace faulty pump last year, original pump was grunfos 15/50, fitted 15/60 as replacement. Set on lowest speed but could more powerfull pump still cause pumping over? House is very average 70's terrace, baxi back boiler, tanks in loft.

I do not think your pump is causing the problem. First check that the the ballcock on the feed & expansion tank is not letting by. If it isn't then I suspect the coil inside the cylinder is split.

This is a good way to tell if the cylinder coil is split. Isolate the cold water entering the cold water storage tank (do not turn any hot taps on at this point). Providing the f & e tank is lower the water should fall in the storage tank (the largest of the two), and the f & e should fill up and overflow. When the levels are the same the f & e tank should stop overflowing. If this is the case you will need to replace your cylinder.

Please can you clarify that you suspect it is the expansion tank. This is the smaller of the two tanks in the loft. If it's the bigger of the two then there are other faults which may cause this to overflow.
