Sediment Carbon

How do you clean white quartz rock?

I found a nice specimen and i need to clean it at home because i can't get my hands on the needed chemicals without a license It has brown sediment on the sides and it has greenish black stuff in the cracks/crevasses I think it may be carbon or a carbon based plant how do i clean it without discoloration, breakage, a fire, or toxic fumes?

Quartz crystals are pretty tough customers and you can clean them pretty aggressively, both by mechanical and chemical means. By that I mean you can go after most of them with a stiff brush and scouring powder if you want to and put them in most strong acids without hurting them. You can even use steel or aluminum bristle brushes if you want, but since quartz is harder than these metals, you may have some of the metal rub off on the quartz crystals, which you will then have to clean off the quartz, but it should not hurt the quartz.

Are there any exceptions to this? Yes, if the quartz crystals are loosely jointed together, like a cluster of slightly intergrown Herkimer quartz crystals, rough cleaning may cause the crystals to separate from each other where they grow together. If the crystals are a mass of fine intergrown needles, rough treatment may cause some to break off. If the quartz is of the “water quartz” –fenster-jacaree variety, and contain fluid inclusions and bubbles, if you subject them to freezing temperatures or toss them in boiling water, the crystals my crack. Quartz crystals from some localities do seem to be very sensitive to thermal shock. The herkimer diamonds from New York appear to be some of these. When first collected, some collectors have learned to quickly wrap them up, mud and all and put them in an ice chest the let them get used to life outside of the pocket the formed in. Then in a day or so carefully clean them in water that is the same temperature as the quartz. Not doing this risks shattering some of the beautiful clear crystals. Crystals from some of the Herkimer localities seem to be more sensitive to thermal shock than others. These are exceptions. Most quartz crystals are more tolerant of temperature change than these crystals, but this is something to think about when you are cleaning your quartz crystals. If you clean a lot of quartz from a particular locality you will quickly learn what they can tolerate and what they can not. Of course if you bang your quartz crystals together, they may chip each other. Finally, quartz specimens with associated minerals may limit your aggressive cleaning options because of the possible delicate nature of the associated minerals. Other than these exceptions, you should feel free to have at them.

Keep in mind that in most instances the “dirt” you want to clean off of your quartz crystals are minerals also, and that when you “clean” the specimen you are actually removing minerals from the specimen that nature put there. Some collectors and mineralogists feel strongly that by removing this “dirt” you are destroying data that would better be preserved for future generations. Historically, this is not done very often because the lure of a possibly more beautiful and valuable mineral specimens is often irresistible. Some times you can mostly clean your specimens and leave some of the natural “dirt” on a part of the specimen that will not detract from its “curb appeal”. Also fortunately quartz is one of the most abundant minerals on the earth, and for every one you “destroy” cleaning, there are plenty more left to study.

Don’t Waste Your Money On A Sediment Water Filter

It is not that I am against water filters. But when it comes to a sediment water filter, I simply can’t understand how it can prove useful to us?

After all not many of us own a spa or a pool where we can comfortably employ a sediment water filter and ensure that all the particles and granular contaminants are removed from the water being filled in the pool . There is nothing more to really expect from these filters.

If you are like me who need an efficient system for purifying the water you use for drinking and cooking purposes – a sediment water filter is just not the thing.

It is too basic and can only take care of the bigger contaminants present in water.

Tell me, if you take a glass full of tap water, do you see any sediment, dirt, rust flakes etc in it?

I am sure the answer is No. And that is because they have already been removed even before the water is supplied to our homes. And these particles are literally the only things which a sediment water filter can remove.

What it cannot remove and is there in tap water is other smaller contaminants which cannot be seen by the naked eye. As per the facts there are over 80,000 contaminants present in tap water at one time or another. And out of them 2100 are known to cause cancer!

In order to get rid of all these potentially hazardous pollutants, what we need is an advanced water filter - one which employs cutting edge technologies like carbon filtration, sub micron filtration and ion exchange or may be a combination of these techniques.

When all these techniques work in tandem, we can be assured of the purity of the water produced. These categories of purifiers which employ multiple stages of purification are known as multi stage water purifiers.

The results that these purifiers can provide is 99% clean and pure water which is just not possible with a sediment filter.

With so many advanced water purifiers available today and that too with such reasonable price – I feel – buying a sediment water filter is nothing better than wasting your money. All it is trying to remove is something which has already been removed from the water – even before water reaches your home!

You need to invest in an efficient water unit which can remove other contaminants from tap water and make it safe for your consumption. This safety is something which a sediment water filter can never provide. If you want to know about one such effective purifier, visit my website listed below.
