Reverse Osmosis Carbon

Which water filter is better for home use - Carbon block or Reverse Osmosis?

Carbon block is much more expensive, but is it better?

Whicih one works better?

They work equally good as far as cleanliness. The reverse oasmosis though has a much lower throughut, so if you drink a lot, go with the charcoal

What Does Reverse Osmosis Do - Find Out Why It's not Enough

Generally speaking, what does reverse osmosis do? It is generally used to separate one solution from another. For example, if you asked a manufacturer of frozen concentrated orange juice, "What is reverse osmosis?" He would tell you that the system removes most of the water from the juice. So that it can be easily frozen, packaged, and shipped to consumers.

But you probably want to know what does reverse osmosis do to water. The industrial applications are interesting, but not particularly relevant to homeowners and consumers. First, let's look at this question. What is reverse osmosis meant to do to water?

Years ago, the industrial applications were modified to suit the needs of homeowners in rural areas. These people only had an above ground source for drinking water or they had private wells that were contaminated with lead, iron, arsenic, or other naturally occurring elements. It was the best system available at the time, but things have changed and technology has advanced. Still, there are other questions.

What is reverse osmosis meant to do in areas where there is high calcium or other mineral content? Minerals like calcium can spoil the taste and appearance of water. They cause a problem known as "hard water", which prevents soaps from being sudsy and causes a white build-up on plumbing fixtures.

So what does reverse osmosis do to calcium and other minerals? It reduces their content, but it does not do it selectively. An effective system would remove practically all of the naturally occurring minerals but leave the trace minerals because they are good for health and wellness. Reverse osmosis removes all minerals.

Ion exchange, however, can be adapted to remove metallic traces and balance mineral content, so that water is healthy and tastes good. This feature also improves the pH levels, so that it is good for the digestive system. But the big question has to do with chemical contaminants that are so common in today's water supply.

What is reverse osmosis meant to do against chemical contaminants?  Chemicals are molecularly smaller than water. The membranes in a reverse osmosis system could not allow water to pass through if they were also to reduce chemicals.

Chemicals can only be trapped through a process called adsorption. Media, such as granular carbon and special resins, are needed to trap chemicals. So, what does reverse osmosis do to remove chemicals? The answer is.... nothing.

If you live in the service area of a public water treatment facility, then you need a purifier that includes granular carbon or better yet, a carbon block with a sub-micron sized porous structure. In other words, you need something other than reverse osmosis.

Hopefully, the information in this article explained what is reverse osmosis and you'll be able to find a purifier that protects your family. There are other questions pertaining to what does reverse osmosis do, but at least now you have a starting point.
