Before we answer the question - What is in tap water? we may find it helpful to understand what MCL's are. This is short for Maximum Contaminant Levels and is applied to a whole list of undesirable pollutants that are found in tap water in varying degrees.
The US Environmental Protection Agency enforces the MCL's as determined by legislation and publish a comprehensive list on their website.
Here you will find a category list highlighting six potential sources of contamination:
* Microorganisms
* Disinfectants
* Disinfection Byproducts
* Inorganic Chemicals
* Organic Chemicals
* Radionuclides
Data based on how an adult weighing approximately 175 pounds is potentially effected by these toxins is used to determine what is acceptable as the maximum contaminant level.
This level does not take into consideration that we are often exposed to more than one contaminant at a time, in fact the more accurate take is that we are subjected to traces of dozens of different toxic chemicals in our tap water.
Lets take a closer look at one Inorganic Chemical, Lead.
How does lead get into our tap water? Rarely it is found at source, usually its picked up on the way through corrosion of household plumbing systems such as old pipes made of lead which are often found in houses built before 1970.
Most houses have some form of lead contamination as there may also be leeching from brass or chrome-plated brass faucets and fixtures and solder products used on joints in copper piping, especially from hot water.
According to the EPA infants and children may be affected by this contaminant, experiencing delays in physical or mental development; children could show slight deficits in attention span and learning abilities
The effects on adults can be Kidney problems or high blood pressure.
This is just one pollutant on a list as long as your arm of what is in tap water, the only difference is that there is no acceptable level where lead is concerned, its accepted it should not be there at all. Even very low levels are recognized as potential health risks.
Ideally we should not have a MCL for any contaminant that has the risk attached to it of causing damage to our health and all the more so with our children's health.
Rather than the quality of our water being determined in this way we are better served by sourcing an in house water filter that is proven to remove lead and other contaminants effectively and economically.
Be sure also to check out the manufacturers performance data and and look out for a Health Department Certification if possible. This way we can establish the contaminant levels we are willing to accept in our tap water. Zero or 98-99% free seems good to me.
