In the U.S., many of us take the purification of water for granted. We trust that the water filtering systems of our municipalities will ensure that the water distributed to the homes in the community will be safe to use and drink.

If your drinking water comes from a well, its' even more important that you have it tested. Well water is by nature subject to chemical and mineral contamination. If your water test reveals contamination, consider a water filtering system.

Testing water is good but it's something that should be done periodically not just once. Why is it important to test your water? Just look around. Lawn care companies as well as homeowners dump millions of tons of pesticides into the soil every year. Some of those pesticides eventually end up in the water that we use. How much and which ones? Maybe none, or maybe just a few. But it's impossible to know without having your water tested.

There are many types of water filtering systems and they work on various principles. Of all the types, however, there are three main types - distillation, reverse osmosis, and carbon bonding.

Distillation filter - this filtering system utilizes either boiling and/or evaporation to vaporize the water into steam. The steam then condenses into a separate chamber, leaving the impurities behind in the first chamber.

Reverse osmosis filter - water is forced through a semipermeable membrane. The membrane filters out impurities leaving purified water in the receiving area.

Carbon bonding filter - water is forced through the pores of a piece of carbon material such as a carbon block. Carbon is a highly absorbent material. As water passes through it, it traps impurities such as solvents, poisons, chemicals, pesticides, and other chemical substances.

Carbon based filtration systems are effective if the flow rate of the water is slow enough to give the carbon time to traps impurities. If the flow rate is too fast, the carbon based filter may have no effect.

A ceramic based water filtration system is a very inexpensive physical based filter. It takes advantage of the small sized pores in ceramic by using it to filter out dirt, debris, and some bacteria. You'll find this type of filter used quite a bit in poorer countries. It's biggest drawback is that it's of almost no use against chemical contaminants.

Multi-method filter -

There's no such thing as a 100% effective filtration method. That's why the best filters combine two or more types filtration methods.

For those that love camping and are also health conscious, a portable water filtering system is the perfect accessory to take with you. You can buy so called portable base camp water filters from camping supply stores from as low as $50 to as high as $700.

For at home filters, the most worrying you'll likely have to do with a home water filtering system is figuring out when to change the filter. These days, most of these filters come with a meter or other indicator to tell you when to change the filter.
