Is it absolutely *necessary* to follow the standard rules governing vampire lore?

Okay...

Just so no one here thinks I'm strange or anything...?

The book I'm writing on (The Vampiress Hunter) has so far:

*A Romanian vampiress hunter; part-vampire/part human.

*This vampi of mine loves chocolate. (Addicted would be more like it.)

*Marlena has had plenty of bi-sexual relationships for the last 700 years or so.

*Has a cat she loves very much.

*A student of Berkey for the last 3 years running--and is close friends with a young woman named Tabby.

*Not as nocturnal as her fictional counterparts. Marlena sleeps like the dead in her soft bed. (No pun intended.)

*No aversion to sunlight. Doesn't like holy water--because she has had a long-term allergy to it. (But not just because Marlena's part-vampire--mind you.)

*No reaction to garlic when used either as a condiment or a weapon.

*And crosses don't affect her either.

Opinions or thoughts?

Yes, I think you have to stay with the "reality" that people believe in. If you want to endear yourself with the readers of such stories.

Vampires have their own reality, and changing the rules after several decades may mean you become a "stranger", among the genre, or your books stay unsold. .

What I'd suggest is adding into your story line NEW technology, or hi-tech methods that Vampires learn to avoid the old problems.

Like taking some injection that will make them immune to garlic effects.
Sort of like Superman using lead to shield himself from Kryptonite.

Instead of just saying sunlight has NO affect on the vampiress, have her invent a very powerful sunblock.

Crosses won't affect her, because she's studied Voodoo mind-control techniques, for example,, and has developed a different magikal outlook on life, that has blocked traditional voodoo religious power of the cross, by retraining her mind.

The cat might also become a Vampire, if you haven't written that into story. Because the vampiress has bit the cat, after the cat scratched her. This will endear you to cat lovers, because the cat will become immortal too.

And, you might want to have the two communicate with metal-telepathy. The cat could "know" things the Vampiress doesn't know. (such as who were her enemies, or who to watch out for, the cat can "smell a rat")

Just my thoughts, as you asked.

Your Drinking Water Is Poisoned!

Consider this quote: "U.S. drinking water contains more than 2,100 toxic chemicals that can cause cancer." So said Ralph Nader of the Ralph Nader Research Group. By the way, water utilities test for only about 75 of these. This article will focus on just one of these toxins found in most public water, chlorine.

When I was a kid, I won a fish at the carnival. I was thrilled! The first think I had to do, of course, was to buy a larger tank and fill it with tap water. Yet, so as not to kill my trophy, I had to treat water with some de-chlorinating tablets. Question: if fish will die in chlorinated water, why do we think it's OK for us to drink it? Yet, shocking as this may seem, the acceptable level of chlorine in some water systems is above the maximum recommended for swimming pools!

Chlorine is an excellent disinfectant. We use chlorine bleach to clean a house or purify a well. Bacteria such as typhoid, cholera, or dysentery are wiped out in its presence. However, chlorine also damages the body. It produces substances called THMs (trihalomethanes). These damage the cells and are cancer causing. Chlorine can also damage the arteries making is easier for cholesterol to attach itself to their walls. At times contamination gets into a city water system and it must be purged with extra chlorine. Research shows that such times evoke an increase in bladder, kidney, and urinary tract cancers. Drinking water taken from the Mississippi River contains 63 cancer causing compounds all of which are made when chlorine reacts with pollutants such as carbon disulphide and methanol, both present in the water.

Drinking contaminated water is only one way chlorine enters the body. Even taking a shower can put a person at risk. The warm water causes the chlorine to evaporate, and the steam in the shower might contain as much as 20 times more chlorine than the tap water! This chloroform is a cause of bronchitis, asthma, and certain types of cancer. The open pores in the skin take in even more chlorine and cause skin irritations such as eczema. The only protection from this is a shower water filter.

Conscientious parents are rightly alarmed by all this. They know that the bodies of their small children are affected more by the contaminants than the parents are. Think of it; mothers who prepare formula with tap water may be inadvertently poisoning their baby!

Some deal with these alarming facts by buying bottled water. Yet consider this: bottled water may be no purer than tap water! This is because there are simply no government standards that require bottled water to be any better. A company could bottle tap water and ship it to another state with the label, "Pure Mountain Fresh Water." This is not honest but it is legal. The FDA itself states: "Companies that market bottled water as being safer than tap water are defrauding the American public." In other words, with bottled water you can't believe what the label says.

The only safe sure way to guarantee your family is getting chlorine free water is to filter it yourself. Start by purchasing a filter that promises to remove chlorine.
