Does UV light degrade plastic? If you purify water in a PVC plastic tube, what will happen to the plastic?

My company, SunnIght Solar, wants to manufacture a solar powered water purifier - I have reviewed the UC and MIT web sites, however, the information on the problems with UV and PVC are not clear. markbent@sunnightsolar.com

Yes, UV degrades plastic, and PVC is one of the worst of the clear plastics in this regard. Google "UV plastic degradation" and "plastic UV resistance"for a wealth of information. You also have to consider the UV transparency of the plastic, so the UV can get into the water and do some good. Looking at your website, I'd suggest trying to interest a good plastics engineer in your cause.

Brita Water Filters

Drinking water filters provide much-needed protection against possible harm that may come to you and your family through your water supply. And if you want guaranteed protection, don’t just trust your family’s safety to any brand. Here are the top three drinking water filter brands you can count on.

Brita: Pure and Clean Water Made Simple

Needless to say, Brita is the leading manufacturer of household drinking water filters. Brita water filters focus on a very simple and cost-effective method of purifying your water without all the fuss, but with every ounce of effectiveness possible. Brita is most renowned for its unique Brita water pitchers with built-in filters.

One of the most-liked pitchers, with a 4.4 rating on Amazon, is the Aqualux Water Pitcher with Filter. It can pour up to six 8-ounce glasses and comes with a convenient flip-top lid so you can easily refill it with water. It also comes with an electronic filter change indicator to let you know when it’s time to replace the filter.

The Brita Aqualux Water Pitcher Filter uses an ion exchange resin filter that magnets most of the impurities lurking in drinking water. By doing so, it shields you from drinking the harmful water. It can remove lead, mercury, cadmium, zinc, ad copper. In effect, water comes out clean, pure, and great-tasting.

Culligan: Pure and Clean Water Made EZ

Culligan is another widely trusted brand of water purification systems. One of its most well-known products is the IC-EZ-1 EZ-Change Icemaker and Drinking Water Filter, which got 5 stars on Amazon. The drinking water filter is easy to use with its twist mechanism, which gives the no-leak guarantee so you get to save water. It also comes with a double water shutoff. It is easy to mount, with Quick Connect Fittings and a cover that will conceal the mounting screws for a clean and organized look. All the tools you need in installation are included in the package.

The IC-EZ-1 EZ-Change Icemaker and Drinking Water Filter from Culligan has also been NSF certified and can be used to filter up to 3000 gallons of water. It is effective in removing unpleasant taste and odor from water, especially the taste and odor of chlorine. It can also filter out class III particulates for thorough cleansing. And when it’s time to replace the filter, Culligan replacement filters are widely and conveniently available.

Watts: Pure and Clean Water Made Innovative

If the other two brands focus on simple water filtration, Watts sets its sights on water filtration innovations and new technologies. One such offer is the 500320 3-Stage Undercounter Drinking Water Filter that pushes water through three different filtration stages for thorough cleansing. The best news of all: the third stage is an Ultraviolet or UV unit, which uses UV lamps to eliminate bacteria and viruses that have managed to survive the first two filtration stages.

Together, the three filtration stages can remove lead, particulates, and cysts, and can restore water to its refreshing taste and smell, freeing it from the taste and smell of chlorine. All in all, it can filter up to 1,350 gallons of water. It is rated with 4.7 stars on Amazon, making it an ideal choice. It is innovative and thorough, yet very easy to install and to maintain. Another excellent news: it comes with its own lead-free faucet.

Water Softener Filter

There is no one substance that is more important to man than water. After all, water does make up more than two-thirds of the human body. Water, then, is essential in every possible way. In fact, people won’t survive without it. Unfortunately, there’s no telling just how unsafe the world’s water sources now are, given the extensive threat of water pollution. Now, a clean water supply is quite elusive, and this is why water purifiers and filters exist.

Why invest in one?

Water is clear and transparent; how much dirt could there be? Well, you’ll be surprised at how much dirt and chemicals are lurking in your water supply. Even though these chemicals are not directly dangerous especially since they appear in very small amounts anyway, they can still pose quite a threat given that we use water every day and even consume a lot of it on a daily basis. So to ensure your safety and that of your family, getting a water purifier makes a highly worthy investment.

What are you in danger of?

If you’re still skeptic, perhaps a list would be more convincing. According to countless studies, various water supply systems all over the world have listed contaminants ranging from lead, pesticides, cysts, viruses, bacteria, to pharmaceutical drugs. Just imagine what all these can do to your health if you are exposed to them regularly through the water you use and drink.

The basics

To protect yourself, you need a water purifier. The basic concept behind water purifiers is water filtration. This is the simple process of filtering, or sifting out, any contaminants in the water supply to make the water safe and clean. Water purifier filters revolve around the use of the filter itself, which is a material that separates the clean water from the contaminants when the water passes through it. Different materials can filter out contaminants in different ways. For example, reverse osmosis uses a semi-permeable membrane as a filter, while an activated carbon water filter uses either a block of carbon or granulated carbon.

Behind the scenes

Nowadays there are newer methods of water purification that does not make use of an actual filter that the water goes through. For example, there are UV or Ultraviolet water purifiers that just expose the water to UV light in order to kill germs and other contaminants.

Some drawbacks to consider

Most water filter systems rely mainly on gravity so that the water will go through the filter, although water purifier filters that do not have any special mechanism to push water through at a much faster rate usually produce water more slowly. This can be a problem especially in large households that need a lot of water.

Aside from that, almost all water filter systems require you to replace the main filter every six months. You can, however, look for some water purifier filter that can go for as long as one year without replacement. But to ensure the effectiveness of the water filter, make sure you replace the filter when needed.

Some water purifiers and filters don’t work effectively against some contaminants. What you can do is combine two different water purifier filters so you get the best benefits from both systems.

Which is the best water purifier (HLL Pureit or Aquaguard I-Nova)?

I am in a midst of confusion to decide between two water purifiers, i have read the reviews of both and found alomost the same...So I thought I would check in Yahoo answers to get the final decision, coz I need to take it as soon as possible...

. After reading the Reviews on the mouthShut site, I would NOT get an Aquaguard !
But pureit seems to have a problem with their 'taps' breaking. Maybe that's a minor problem?
You might want to read this site @ http://ezinearticles.com/?How-to-Find-the-Best-Water-Purifier-for-Your-Home&id=106220 .
Me, I'd probably go with Culligan since they've been around forever.

Compare Water Filters

According to several water purifier reviews we've conducted, there are many different systems out there that do not live up to their hype. While just about any type of filtration system will remove some unwanted elements from your drinking supply, some will definitely do the job more efficiently and more effectively than others.

One water purifier review focused on distillation and reverse osmosis systems. Distilling is an old process of heating H20 into a steam, which boils away impurities, then converting the steam back to liquid. Unfortunately, some chemicals and diseases are not removed and end up in the drinking supply. Reverse osmosis forces H20 through a fine membrane: the problem is that many chemicals are molecularly smaller than water, therefore are not strained out. Both systems are also slow-yield, hard to maintain, and expensive. Additionally, they both remove important minerals such as potassium and calcium.

Other water purifier reviews focused on the most popular filtration medium: carbon. Most of the best H20 treatment systems employ activated carbon. It works through the process known as adsorption where liquids and dissolved solids adhere to the surface of a solid medium (carbon).

Yet, a water purifier review discovered that not all carbon-based treatment products are alike. If a product contains low levels of activated carbon or the carbon is not exposed to H20 very long, some contaminated elements can end up in the drinking supply. Also, these types of filters are most effective when they are first being used. Over time, the filter will become clogged, and its filtration abilities will lessen. Additionally, bacteria can grow in carbon, we discovered during another one of our water purifier reviews, so using a carbon filter too long and you can actually be adding contaminants to your glass.

Overall, carbon filters remain the best mechanisms for treating your drinking supply. However, since they are not 100% effective, a water purifier review of ours found that they are best used as part of a multi-step process which is able to remove all impurities from H20 and change it so that it is even more beneficial.

Our water purifier reviews found that H20 treatment systems that contain at least two separate filters with at least one being carbon, are the best for removing all chemicals and stray bits of sediment. If the first filter misses one contaminant, the second filter is there to catch it. Typically the first filter is there to catch larger particles while the second filter removes smaller elements and pathogens.

This makes safe, pure drinking liquid, but there are additional ways you can ensure that what you are drinking is as beneficial as it can be to you. One water purifier review found that some systems work an ion exchange, replacing lead ions with the beneficial mineral potassium. Other studies discovered that an ionizing water filter produces alkaline H20 which is full of oxygen and extra electrons for fighting free radicals and acidic H20 which is excellent for external cleansing.

In all of our water purifier reviews, we found overwhelmingly that carbon-based filters worked best in conjunction with other steps that removed everything that should not be in your glass and added all the things that should be there to improve your health.

Water Purifier Reviews: What Role Do They Play?

This is where you call for reinforcements – water purifier reviews. Water purifier reviews are reviews on the various brands and models of water purifiers usually written by industry experts or consumers. These reviews often reveal a lot about the water purifier you have in mind, and they give information not provided by the water purifier brands themselves, which means information is unbiased and objective.

Most reviews list down the pros and cons of the water purifier, and notes any special observations in terms of actual use of the product.

Not all reviews, however, can be trusted. Look for reviews from trusted reviewers and review sites such as magazine reviews. Also, reading professional reviews is not as good as reading reviews from actual consumers like you.

Some reviews focus on company information and brand milestones; these are not the reviews that can help you in your choice. Look for reviews that revolve around the actual installation and use of the products. Important factors include reliability, price, durability, and performance.
