There is a lot of hype and doubtful claims about water filters in the media. It's hard for the average consumer to understand the different methods and types of water filtration systems without buying into all the sales talk.

Water filtration or treatment in itself is a quite a large topic with many methods and technologies involved. Most household water filters/treatment systems are designed to remove various contaminants such as chlorine, lead, mercury, Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOCs), Total Dissolved Solids (TDSs), Cryptosporidium, Chloramines, pesticides, herbicides, Giardia and other bad smell or taste elements.

Feature and Function Differences

Most water filters work on the same general process. Water is passed through a filtration agent (physical, chemical or ultra-violet) where contaminants are either removed or neutralized. The treated water is then either dispensed out of the system or is stored in a storage tank for future use. Generally, most water filters are fairly simple and inexpensive items that aren't very different from one manufacturer to the next. Below is a list of features and functions which you should consider before buying a water filtration system.

1). Filtering Technology

The first and most common sort of filter uses a physical barrier to remove suspended particles such as mud, silt, sand or rust as well as micro-organisms such as Giardia or Cryptosporidium. Physical filters are measured by microns. The finer the filter the smaller the micron number and the more types of particles can be removed from the raw water.

Another type of filter uses chemical processes to remove or neutralize potentially harmful contaminants in raw water. Depending on the type of contaminant, the filter elements can comprise of activated charcoal, copper, zinc etc.

The newest form of filtration technology is to use ultra-violet light to destroy bacteria, viruses or pathogens in water. The ultra-violet light is typically encased in a tank where-by the water is treated either when in storage or is run through a ultra-violet canister. The ultra-violet light deactivated the DNA of the organic particulates which ruin their ability to reproduce and cause disease.

Typically, a water filtration system will contain more than one type of filter because each filter has its own specific strengths and together enable a much wider spectrum of filtration.

2). System Types

There are a few basic types of water filters that range from small portable units to units that can supply an entire house or office. Here are the more common types:

Counter-top: These types of filters are placed on top as of the counter as suggested by the name and is connected to the faucet. The system normally has limited capacity while the filtered water is only available at the faucet.

Under-counter: These systems are very similar to the counter-top systems in that they have smaller capacities and only provide treated water to one faucet. The difference is that these systems don't take up valuable counter space however would require more sophisticated plumbing which makes it slightly more expensive.

Faucet Mounted: These systems are the cheapest and easies to install however offer the least amount of filtration. The system is mounted on the faucet itself and offers treated water to that faucet alone.

Whole House: These water filter systems are typically the most comprehensive and costly filter types that will be needed for a house or office. These systems attach to the pipe mains before entering the house/office which means that they will supply treated water to the entire house/office. These water filters are generally quite expensive to buy and maintain however all water in the house is treated.

Water Softeners: These types of water filters are used specifically to remove only some types of contaminants, namely unwanted elements such as calcium, magnesium, lime, and iron from a household's water supply. These elements make water taste metallic and salty.

Dispensers/Pitcher Water Filter: These systems are normally very simple filter assemblies that are built into a Pitcher/Dispenser. Again, this type of filter is very simple and cheap however doesn't filter contaminants all that well compared to the more comprehensive examples.

Portable: These water filters are made to be portable, some are designed for camping and light travel while some are built into sports drink bottles. Interestingly, an ultra-violet light pen is available which should act as a microbe de-activator similar to more complex household systems as mentioned earlier.

3). Capacity

There are generally two measurements for water filters that use "capacity". Capacity can be used as a measure to determine how much water the filter can actually treat before it needs filter replacements.

On the other hand, capacity is also a measure of the storage tank if the water treatment system is built with a storage tank. This goes hand-in-hand with the flow rate. This measurement is normally in gallons per minute. It should be noted that for counter-top or under-sink applications, flow rate isn't that important as waiting a few seconds longer to fill a glass of water won't be much of an issue. However, flow-rate is very important for Whole House systems, you won't want to be stuck in the shower with no water.

It should be noted that capacity and flow rates are directly related to how expensive the system will be.

4). Costs

When choosing to buy a water filter, you must also consider the maintenance and running costs of the filter. Generally the more complex and higher capacity systems will cost more to maintain and also more to run. Depending on the amount of water treated, water filter systems will need their filters replaced or treated every so often.

Additionally, some complex filters like Reverse Osmosis water filters will only produce 1 gallon of water for every 4 gallons of water supplied which will mean an increase in your water bills too. Further to this, ultra-violet light systems will also require a power source which will also affect your electricity bills.

In conclusion, I hope I have shed some light on buying water filters. The list of points in this article are by no means exhaustive but should serve as a rough guide in the selection process.

Drinking Water Filter Systems

Why do you need a drinking water filter system in your home? The main reason is your health may be at risk. The right water filter system can protect your home drinking water from contaminants such as bacteria, chemicals, chlorine and other potentially dangerous things.

Water is Vital to Life and Good Health

Your body is 70% fluid and you lose bodily fluids daily. The best way to replace them is by drinking water. But the water must be safe, clean and pure. Tap water is potentially harmful. An in-home drinking water filter system can turn your tap water back into something that you enjoy drinking.

Is Your Water Safe or Contaminated?

When you find out what is lurking in your water, you may not want to drink it. A lot of people do not realize what they are drinking, and thus continue to use tap water. Many of the most harmful contaminants are hard to detect because they are without odor or color. We want you to know why a water filter system for your home is so important.

Chlorine - The Good and The Bad

Tap water that comes into your home has chlorine in it put there by the public water system. It is good that they put it there. It kills bacteria that cause cholera.

However, chlorine is not good for your body. It should be removed before you drink. You should look for a drinking water filter system that is certified to remove at least 99% of the chlorine. There are several on the market. I found that a website that has an excellent water filter. I will talk more about it in a moment.

So why is chlorine not good at all times? In the shower it causes dry skin. Some people are allergic to it. But the worst thing is that there is a relationship between chlorine in our water supply and cancer. Several scientific studies have revealed the connection. People with chlorinated water have an increased risk of cancer. A chemical and chlorine blocking water filter can reduce your risks.

Other Water Contaminants

Being a country of consumers, all that we use on the land will sooner or later end up in the water supply. Pesticides, herbicides, gasoline additives and a thousand other chemicals have been found in drinking water and all of them can cause cancer. You may think that the public drinking water filter system takes care of these things, but the facilities were not designed to handle these issues.

The public drinking water system in many areas is outdated. It uses old technology that does nothing to filter out chemicals. The latest technology has gone into the best home water filter system, so that it can remove chemical contaminants. If you look for product performance data that certifies removal of VOCs, THMs, benzene, alachlor, atrazine, lindane, TCE and MTBE, you'll be safe.

The right drinking water filter is one that balances mineral content and pH level. Distillers and reverse osmosis are old technologies that block minerals, leaving the water with an acidic pH.

Most reverse osmosis will not remove chemicals, like chlorine unless it has a carbon filter. Distillers will leave you with a dry powder that is chemical in nature. With the latest technology, you are left with nothing but pure healthy water.

Best Choice for the Home

No home water filter system will not protect you from all of the diseases that are out there. But, it can protect you from all water borne diseases. Some bacterial contaminants are resistant to chlorine disinfection.

Those who specialize in water filters call those bacteria, cysts. This is in reference to the oocyst or spore stage. If they get inside the human body, they can grow, causing illness and even death. In order to protect your family from them, you need a drinking water filter system that removes cysts. It should be listed on the performance data sheets. Look for it. For more information please see my website. - Larry L. Taylor

why wont water come out of my water filter system?

well you know that drinking water filter in the kitchen sink next to the standard faucet? i dont know why, but water wont come out. it worked in the morning but when i came home in the evening and tried to get a drink of water, nothing came out. the regular faucet next to it still works fine. i checked under the sink but no pipe/tube seems to be out of place. what could be wrong? i dont want to hire an expensive profesional....

Sounds like a clogged filter. Take the filter out and put a new one in...or at least take the old one out and check to see if something might have plugged the inlet hole. If it fairly new...try shaking it out the inlet hole and putting the filter back in.

Portable Water Filter

Are you a hundred percent sure that the water you drink is potable and safe and does not contain harmful substances? No one who uses water from the generally available water system can answer this question affirmatively except of course if he has devised a method to purify his water supply.

The United States Drinking Water Act provides for the issuance of reports on the quality of water in a certain area every year. The report must be provided to all consumers. These reports can be helpful in determining the current status of an area's water system. However, most cities actually comply with the federal rules on water safety so nothing much can be gleamed form that report. While there is a low level of carcinogen in drinking water, experts believe that there may be a link to the low carcinogen level in water to the increasing number of people getting cancer.

Fear of the quality and contents of water being distributed by their own water systems has led to the growth of businesses related to water treatment. While water companies used to get their bread and butter from selling water equipment that can get rid of mineral contents, their business has grown to great proportions in the last twenty five years. Most of these companies are now selling systems specifically targeted and used for treating water and improving water taste. The demand for water treatment and improvement is expected to grow even rapidly in the next few years with water treatment facilities becoming a common household item.

Water can give life but it can also taste bad. With this realization, people are becoming more concerned about ways and means to improve their water supply to improve taste. Proof of this is the massive growth of the bottled water industry.

Most water systems rely on chlorinated water for both drinking and bathing use. However, there are sectors who believe that the use of chlorinated water can cause itching and loss of natural oils in the skin. It can also rid the body of useful bacteria that can defend the skin against skin diseases. Most drinking water shows a chlorine residue level of more than 1.5 ppm, the recommended chlorine level for swimming pools.

To make sure that their water is safe, people opt for water filter devices. Water filters can be expensive at first glance but it is really cost effective in the long term depending on the kind of water filter that you purchase. There are water filters that can be used without using electricity and without much need for parts replacement. There are portable water filter systems that can be easily attached to your home faucets.

If you have a budget, then opt for a centralized water filter system for the entire home. This type of water filter system filters all water that is being used in your home, whether for drinking or bathing.

Price can be an issue when choosing the best water filter device for your home use. However, when you think of the possible benefits your family can get from filtered water, it makes the cost of installing one the best option.

Home Water Filter: A Must Have For Every Residence

You arrive home after a hard day at work. You're hot, you're tired, and you're thirsty. First things first: you grab a glass from the cupboard, turn on the tap and feel the glass change temperature as the cold liquid fills the glass. You put the glass to your lips and gulp the cold poison down.

Yes, you read that correctly: poison. It won't kill you in a day or a week or even a month, but water that does not come from a home water filter is increasingly becoming toxic to our bodies. That's because the fragile ecosystem isn't a closed loop and the poison we put into the air and earth end up in our water. What's more, many municipalities add chemicals to the water to make it safe to drink but which, in the long run, can contribute to diseases such as osteoporosis or even cancer.

A home water filter is your best solution

If you own a house, water filter systems should be present. If not, make it a priority investment. A home water filter system, when correctly installed and consistently maintained, can deliver clean and healthy water from your taps to your glass and ultimately to your body. You'll enjoy healthier living now and in the future. Home water filter systems are available in a variety of applications.

Among the most common is the pitcher-style house water filter where you pour water into the top of the pitcher and wait while clean, fresh, filtered H20 enters the container. While this is the most common and a great start, it only filters water you manually pour into the top.

Another popular style is the faucet home water filter model, which is affixed to your taps and filters all water as it comes out. This is an extremely popular model and ensures that the water you drink and cook with is filtered.

But the kitchen isn't the only place where you want pure water in your house. Water filter systems are available for the bathroom, as well where brushing your teeth or using the shower could expose you to unfiltered water.

Water seems like one of earth's unlimited resources. There is so much of it; it seems to be replenished with every rainfall, and the oceans are vast. But among the earth's waters there is only a limited amount that is actually drinkable and that amount is quickly diminishing as humankind poisons itself. A home water filter is an investment that can help to prolong your own health and return cleaner water to the environment.

Tap Water has become dangerous today -- this is the result of the numerous studies done by governmental and press agencies recently because of drugs in major cities public water supplies. Drugs present include radiation or chemotherapy prescriptions, sex hormones, painkillers, antibiotics and others. The best defense is to install your own tap Water Purifier or tap Water Filter system.

There are 41 million Americans who are drinking tap water that was found to contain drugs. Many of them don’t even know it. That was just from the sampling taken in the studies. Groundwater and well sources could be contaminated as more livestock steroids and pesticides are used in farming operations. Shampoos, soap and cleaning products are washing down into all the drains and many leftover prescriptions get flushed down the toilets.

Studies have shown evolutionary changes in fish and wildlife over the past several years; yet, no actions have been taken to remove drugs in the public water supplies (recycling sewage treatment water.) With the antibiotics in the public water supplies, it is feared that new strains of bacteria will become super viruses that are immune to the present antibiotics. By installing a home water filtration system or tap water filter or purifier, you can make sure your family is safe from contaminants.

You may think bottled water is safe but think again. Ask the people in New York. In fact, a new brand of bottled water prides itself on the novelty of being tap water from the large city. But New York’s water supply contained antibiotics, heart medicine, estrogen, tranquilizers and mood stabilizers. Bottled water is not regulated and may come from taps. There is no guarantee those taps have a tap water filter or any kind of tap water purifier when bottled water is made.

There are no treatment plants for removing drugs from public water supplies that are recycling sewage treatment water. Home water filtration systems like a reverse osmosis system or tap water purifier are a safe way to remove the drugs from their home drinking water, according to the EPA. There is no way to purify drugs in the public water supplies at this time, as it would be too costly.

There are tap water filter systems that attach to your faucet, tap water purifier filters that attach to drinking bottles, where you can make your own bottled water. These are safe methods for removal of drugs in tap water. People are installing whole-house water filtration systems that purify water for showers and hand and clothing washing.

In conclusion, the only way your drinking water will be safe from drugs, chemicals and contaminants is by installing your own tap water filter or tap water purifier. They are very affordable and there is expert help available to consult you on your needs.

Reverse Osmosis Water Filters

It's unbelievable that there are so many water filter systems available on the market today. Their basic function is to clean tap water and provide contaminant free, purity. As I began investigating, I started with a reverse osmosis water filter and was looking to see how it worked and if there were any positives/negatives before deciding how I felt about purchasing one.

Reverse Osmosis works by reversing water through a filter system that eliminates sediment and then uses a membrane that is semi-permeable to complete the filtering process. After that, a carbon filter is utilized and then distributed through a faucet as "purified tap". This unit can typically be installed by a reputable plumber and be used to purify water anywhere in the home. However, after looking into some of the negatives of a reverse osmosis filter, I wasn't too impressed with the results.

This type of system is very efficient at eliminating toxic materials such as rust, lead, parasites, salt, sediments and sulfates. Unfortunately, some of the negatives I discovered were:

Only partial removal of viruses and bacteria that would require another type of water purification system to back it up. This doesn't seem to be a high priority for this type of filter process.

It removes too many minerals that the body desires for good functioning, health and longevity. Minerals such as calcium, potassium and magnesium if eliminated force the body to draw from that which is stored in teeth and bones. Normally, this is caused by the high acid, low pH level of the water.

It takes away water's good taste.

It wastes three to four gallons of water for each one gallon it attempts to purify.

As alkaline turns to highly acid water, it not only causes minerals to again be pulled from teeth and bones, but has also been known in some cases to increase the possibility of developing cancer since more free radicals are produced from this occurrence.

It takes a few hours to install and may require a professional plumber.

So after considering all the negatives about reverse osmosis water filters, I found after extensive research that a multi-stage filter which employs essential and vital purification processes such as ion exchange, sub-micron and carbon filtration would be more beneficial in removing all traces of contaminants. These included eliminating toxins such as VOCs (volatile organic chemicals) like pesticides and herbicides, chlorine, lead and other harmful materials, while it ensured securing the valuable minerals that were critical to the body and contributed to better health.

Now that you are armed with this information, instead of spending valuable time and money on a filtration system that will not do everything you need it to plus bring negative effects to your life, it would be wise to consider one that does, but also adds to your longevity.

Choosing a whole house in-line water filter can be a daunting task. Understandably, any time a home owner looks at laying out a substantial amount of hard earned money, he/she wants to be sure they get the right product.

Buying a whole house water filter is an investment. It adds value to your home but also provides clean, pure drinking water for your family.

The first consideration in choosing a whole house in-line water filter is the quantity of water used by the household. The average family of 4 uses approximately 5 - 6 gallons of water at any given time. There may be occasional spikes up to 8 GPM (gallons per minute). A 9 or 10 GPM system is usually more than enough for the average family. Larger homes or larger families may want to consider a 12 or 14 GPM system - this, of course, depends on the number of people in the home and the number of bathrooms.

Carbon based water filter systems typically use replaceable filter cartridges. Consider the number of cartridges (more cartridges means better filtration but also means more cost to replace those filters). Not all filter cartridges are created equally though. Different companies offer cartridges with different life expectancies. Ask how much water will be filtered before the cartridges need to be replaced and calculate the cost on a cost per gallon of water filtered basis (divide the gallons filtered by the cost of the replacement cartridge to get this number).

A reverse osmosis water filtration system will require backwashing of the filters (they are typically replace very infrequently). You may have to do this manually although some models come with automatic backwash systems. Although with a reverse osmosis filter system you will not have the cost of periodically replacing filter cartridges, the required backwashing of the filters uses a large amount of water so be aware of the added cost on your water bill. If you choose a reverse osmosis water filter system, decide if you want to be responsible for initiating the backwash or if you want the system to do it automatically.

Installation of a whole house in-line water filter will likely require the services of a plumber so consider that as an additional cost when you decide to install a whole house water filter.

In summary - when choosing an whole house in-line water filter, consider the water usage of your home, the life expectancy and cost of replacement filter cartridges, whether you're prepared to do manual a backwash or if this should be an automatic process and don't forget the cost of a plumber to do the installation.

Under Counter Water Filter

All the doctors and nutritionists, all the diets and the fitness instructors tell us to drink as much water as possible, the minimum of liquid consumed during a day being at least 2 liters. And then we hear from the environmentalists and other government organizations that water is contaminated with all kind of bacteria.

The thing that makes drinking water safe is the water filter. Drinking water filters are available now in many forms and using different technologies. The main goal of the drinking water filter is to make the tap water or almost any other type of water safe for drinking.

There are several types of drinking water filters. Some of them are portable ones like for example the water pitcher filters while others need to be attached to the water pipe. Each of them comes with pros and cons and because of the large variety of drinking water filters available on the market it is important to decide the kind of water filter you want.

It's not only that there are drinking water filters available on the market, but also shower filters systems and whole house water filter systems. The drinking water filter is by far the most popular one and is available as portable filter, counter top filter, under counter filter, and faucet mounted filter.

The most popular ones are the charcoal water filters, the ceramic water filters, the reverse osmosis filters and the Ultraviolet water filters. All the filtering systems have cartridges and filters that need to be replaced from time to time, and need to be cleaned.

As in any other market there are several manufacturers, but you are the one that should decide which one is the best for you. If you want to have purified water in your entire house than obviously the best choice is a whole house water filter system. However these systems are somewhat expensive and their maintenance is not very easy either. Nonetheless with such a system you will have purified water in the entire house because the filter system is connected to the pipe before it enters the house.

The cost of a drinking water filter ranges from inexpensive to pricey, but again it depends on the technology used and the amount of water that can be purified. A small water filter will probably be enough to supply your house with drinking water, but more and more people like to have the water they cook with purified too.

Counter top and under counter water filters seem to be good both at giving enough purified water to drink and cook as needed. And while the counter top water filter is easier to install and does not require extra plumbing work, it is usually cheaper than the under the counter water filter.

So if you have enough space on the counter and you only want to have drinking and cooking water, you can definitely choose a counter top water filter. The main disadvantage of a drinking water filter is that you need a filter for each faucet where you want to have drinking water.

A lot of people are getting more and more concerned about the quality of their drinking water. And according to published reports they have very good reason to be concerned. It has been estimated that almost 7 million Americans get sick each year from drinking contaminated tap water. And on top of that, many studies that have been done recently indicate that most bottled water is no better for you than what you may get from your home tap. What that essentially means is that you are paying much more for the same quality of water then.

So water filtration systems have become very popular with many homeowners as a means of improving their home. There are several kinds of filtration systems in use today, and we will try to help you get familiar with the most important ones.

1. The cheapest to purchase, easiest to use, and most portable are water pitchers designed specifically for the purpose of filtering water. The advantage of these water pitchers is their simplicity itself. All you have to do is fill the picture up with tap water and then let it filter out the impurities. The biggest disadvantage to using water pitcher filters is the time that it takes for the water to be filtered. Very often they take 15 minutes or more just to filter a half-gallon of water. So obviously, if you often need water right away this may not be your best solution.

2. The next step up in the water filter chain are faucet mounted water filters. These are often seen advertised on television and in magazines. As the name indicates, they connect to the end of your water faucet, and have a lever so that you can either choose straight tap water, or to send the tap water through your filter instead. These are also very inexpensive types of filters, and very easy to install. They filter water much more quickly than water pitcher filters, but the filter cartridges have to be changed on a regular basis, perhaps every month or so.

3. Undersink water filters have the advantage of providing some of the best overall water filtration possible, and also are stored out of sight. They also work much faster then either water pitcher filters or faucet mounted filters. However, the biggest drawback to them is that in many cases professional installation is a good idea. Some homeowners that are very handy may attempt to tackle the installation of an undersink water filter, but for the average person it may be too much of a job. Cartridges are also used as the filter material for these units, but they only have to be replaced about every six months or so.

4. Whole house water filters are able to provide filtered water to every faucet in your home easily and quickly, which many see as a clear advantage. However, they can be even more involved to install than undersink units, and so most often you will need the services of a plumber to get it set up. The filters in these units also last about six months or so.

5. Reverse osmosis water filters were very popular in the past, but are not nearly as popular today due to the increasing effectiveness of some of the less expensive and easier to install water filtration systems. Perhaps the biggest drawback about reverse osmosis filters is that they waste almost 5 gal. of water for every gallon that they purify. On the plus side though, they are one of the best water filtration systems available, capable of filtering out even some of the smallest and most obscure pollutants.

As you can see, there are several choices to be made when you're considering home water filter systems, and hopefully the information provided above will help you make a more informed choice of the water filtration system that will work best for you.

Cold weather limits work on Marysville waste water treatment plant
Cold weather and the holidays have slowed down work slightly at the Marysville waste water treatment plant, but crews are back to it this week. City Engineer Jason Hami said the $20-million overhaul of the plant is on schedule and within budget.

Water is an essential part of life, and many doctors recommend drinking a large quantity of water every day for optimum health. The water that comes through the tap into each home has a different quality depending on the source of the water supply for that community. The water coming into each home around the country varies in purity, smell and taste.

Many people who believe in drinking plenty of water every day search for the best possible water for their health. Some of these people buy bottled water because they believe that this water is best for them. Others have turned to water filtration systems for pure water.

The water filtration systems can save money for those who have turned to bottled water, and people should be able to get a pure supply of water with these filtration systems. These filtration systems usually depend on water filter cartridges, and these work in different ways. Those that are interested in a filtration system to purify their water should look at each of the systems and the water filter cartridges that are used in each system. The water filter cartridges differ in methods of filtration and costs.

Water Filter Cartridges Are Vital Parts Of Most Filtration Systems

There are large water filter systems that will purify the entire water supply that comes into the home. These systems will purify the water coming into the kitchen faucet. This water is often used for drinking, cooking and making coffee. These systems also purify the water that goes into the bathrooms for showers and baths.

These water filter systems will deliver chemically and microbiologically pure water for optimum health benefits. In addition, some of these systems deliver softer water for better results in dishwashers and washing machines. These systems often provide quality because of the water filter cartridges that are used with the system.

At the other end of the spectrum, there are smaller units that can be placed on the kitchen counter for water purification. These units are usually filled as the water is needed for drinking and making beverages including coffee and tea. Some people might use these smaller units for cooking as well.

The efficiency of these small units also depends on the water filter cartridges designed for these units. These water filter cartridges efficiently remove the harmful substances from the water, but these water filter cartridges purify a much smaller quantity of water.
