What's All the Fuss About Home Water Filters?

What's all the fuss about home water filters? Its seems every time you turn around someone is either talking or writing (like me) about the importance of installing one of these water purification systems in your home.

I write about this subject because I have always been a water drinking enthusiast. My picky taste buds have fueled my search for home water filters that deliver a refreshing, sweet-tasting drink of water. However, I never understood, until recently, how using one of these purification systems could have a tremendous impact on my health and well-being.

During my research I have learned that scientific experts have identified over 75,000 different toxic chemicals that have the potential for being present in our water supplies at any given moment. I know that sounds unbelievable, but just consider that the federal government requires water utilities to provide every customer with a detailed report that lists everything that is in their water.

So now that the problem has been officially recognized its easy to see where all the fuss comes from. But just how do water filters work and how do you know which systems are the best? Well, I've examined the more popular systems and have reached some clear conclusions about the home water filters that do the best job.

Reverse osmosis and distillation are popular systems that were developed for industry but then adapted for home use. The problem with these two systems is that they have major drawbacks when it comes to getting rid of a particular type of organic chemical toxins. These toxins include herbicides and pesticides. These two systems also have problems filtering out certain bacterial cysts. These two filtering processes are incompatible with the molecular size of these contaminants.

In order to be effective home water filters, r.o. and distillation need the addition of a carbon filter system to make up for their filtering deficiencies. These filters must be changed on a regular basis to avoid the build up dangerous chemical toxins.

Since these systems are expensive to begin with, it doesn't make sense to add on an additional expense (and inconvenience) when there is a more affordable and effective alternative. But I'll come to that in a moment..

These two filtration systems have another serious drawback that you should be aware of. Reverse osmosis and distillation strip important mineral content out of the water. The natural calcium, magnesium and potassium that is present in water is vital to your good health.

Medical experts have noted the dangers of drinking demineralized water. They caution that small children, whose bodies are still developing, are among the people who most need to be mineral water healthy.

So how do the best water filters work to get rid of most toxins while leaving minerals untouched? Well, this is where the effective alternative comes in. I have found that home water filters based on a new technology called multi-stage filtration comprehensively purify the water without removing minerals.

In addition to the health and safety benefits that multi-stage filtration provide, you can find a variety of water purification appliances designed to meet every household need. Multi-stage filtration comes in the form of affordable kitchen faucet, shower and whole home water filters. You will also find these appliances easy to install and maintain.

Make no mistake. When it comes to your health and well-being, the fuss about home water filters makes sense. I have more information that answers the question, "how do water filters work?" at my web site. I invite you to drop by and see what all the fuss is about.

Understanding that you need a home water purifier is a good first step. Now, you need to learn how to identify an effective home purifier water system. There are numerous products on the market, but some of them are not really worthwhile investments.

A home water purifier can cost as little as $40 and as much as $800. You can actually mark the very cheap, as well as the very expensive, off of your shopping list.

The most expensive brands include a reverse osmosis or RO step. At one time RO was the best home purifier water system on the market, but technology has moved on.

We also know a lot more about the contaminants that are in our supplies than we did when RO was developed. Then, we thought more about pollutants we could see. Now, we think more about the invisible and microscopic chemicals that build up in our systems destroying our long term health and longevity.

The least expensive home purifier water system is made by Brita, a branch of the Clorox Bleach Company. They know how to remove chlorine, using granular activated carbon. They've used it for years to protect their factory workers from the harmful vapors that they are exposed to every day.

Chlorine gas is toxic to the nervous system. It irritates the eyes, the skin and the lungs. In the home, the chemical becomes gaseous during a shower, when boiling or running very hot water. Inhalation of the vapors triggers asthma attacks and can cause chronic sinus problems.

Showering in chlorinated waters strips the hair and skin of its natural oils. I could go on, but suffice to say that a home water purifier should remove chlorine. But, it should remove other things, as well.

When chlorine reacts with biological material, like bacteria or algae, compounds referred to as trihalomethanes are released. Trihalomethanes or THMs are a chemical compounds made up of methane, halogen and other chemicals. The group includes the chemicals Freon and chloroform. Most of them are considered carcinogenic, in other words, they cause cancer.

Researchers have shown that exposure to THM levels commonly found in chlorinated waters increases the individual risk of colorectal and bladder cancer by about 40%, the longer the exposure and the more sources of exposure, the greater the risk.

The Brita home purifier water system does nothing to remove THMs, neither does PUR, Ever-Pure or Clean & Pure. You can get a home water purifier for the kitchen counter that removes them for around $125, but remember that exposure also occurs in the shower. So, a showerhead filter is recommended.

A home purifier water system should also remove cysts and lead. The best choice is a multi-stage selective filtration device that includes a submicron particle filter to remove cysts, ion exchange to remove lead, granular carbon to remove chlorine and an adsorptive block to remove THMs.

The performance of a home water purifier should be certified by Underwriter's Laboratory, the National Sanitation Foundation and/or the California Department of Health Services. Now you know how to find the best purifiers, so the only remaining step is to buy one.

Let's face it. The quality of water being supplied to our homes is deteriorating day by day. With all kinds of new chemicals being produced in the industries, sooner or later they make their way into the water supply and pose a risk to our health. You need to ask yourself then - can your water purifier filter handle all these chemicals and other contaminants present in the water?

The three main categories of contaminants a good water purifier filter should be able to filter out are:

1) Dust and Organic matter

Dust particles, bacteria, leaves, decayed organic matter – these all fall into this category. They are also the simplest of all to filter out from the water due to their large size, and almost any purifier is capable of handling them. So be it a Distiller, a simple Carbon filter or even a Reverse Osmosis filter, all of them can remove these impurities from the water.

2) Heavy Metals

Traces of heavy metals like Lead and Asbestos can frequently be found in our water. These metals are mostly added into the water due to the industrial wastes being dumped into our water sources like rivers and lakes. The metals from pipes in the water distribution network also add to it. These metals are especially harmful for children and can hamper their physical and mental growth. The good news is – most purifiers can handle these dangerous contaminants too without any problem.

3) Dangerous Chemicals

This is the category of contaminants that separates the boys from the men – so to speak. With the number of chemicals in our water increasing at a rapid rate – the old technologies have not been able to keep pace with them. So the pesticides and fertilizer traces, pharmaceutical drugs, hormones, soaps and shampoos – they all pose a serious health risk that the older Distillers and Reverse Osmosis filters cannot handle. Only a good multi stage water purifier filter can handle these chemicals and produce 99% pure water.

Apart from the purification, another factor to be considered is the mineral content of the water. Water in nature contains many minerals inside like Calcium, Sodium and Magnesium – which are needed by our body to keep running smoothly. Purifiers like Distillers and RO filters remove these minerals from the water. Drinking the resultant de-mineralized water can cause mineral deficiencies in the body and lead to health problems down the line.

Multi stage purifiers score over the other purifiers here also as they do not remove the essential minerals from the water.

Now that you have this information, you can make an intelligent choice as to the right water purifier filter for your home. To know about a high quality line of filters that can do all this and more – visit my website now.

Water Well Filters Water Well Filters

Everpure Water Filters

When it comes to buying a water purifier for your home, there is a whole range of them available in the market today. Starting from those which are available at a low price of $30-$40 to those for which the price goes up to $800. Everpure water filters are one such $300-$800 ranged filters. Let's take these filters as an example to discuss if they are really worth it or are they simply burning a hole in your pocket?

The water supplied in our homes is full of contaminants and impurities like bacteria, viruses, cysts, lead, copper, arsenic, chlorine, pesticides, drugs etc. This water if consumed directly can lead to various health ailments. It is due to this fact that we need to depend on home water purification devices. Everpure water filters are one expensive brand in the market which are effective in removing most of the above mentioned contaminants.

But what these Everpure water filters fail to remove are the dangerous chlorine by-products. Chlorine has a property of reacting with organic pollutants in water and generating various toxic derivatives like chloroform and TTHMs (Total Trihalomethanes). Tell me, if you know that a water purifier is not able to remove such carcinogens, would you still like taking the risk of consuming such "filtered" water?

The basic model of Everpure water filters which lacks this capability of handling TTHMs is ranged anywhere in between $300 and $400. Do you really think it is worth a buy; when there are multi stage water purifiers already available at a much reasonable price. Not to forget that these multi stage filters are 99% effective for all types of contaminants including TTHMs and VOCs.

The advanced model of Everpure water filters is claimed (is still debatable) to have the ability to filter out all these tough contaminants as well. The reason why I took the liberty of calling it debatable is the fact that they are basically a combination of the basic filter and a reverse osmosis based filter. A reverse osmosis water filter is something which makes their advanced filter even worse than the basic ones. And to top this it is priced at a high $800.

The truth about what reverse osmosis can do to your drinking water is no more a secret. They actually strip off all essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, sodium, zinc etc from the water thereby making it de-mineralized. Consuming such water not only gives a flat taste but is very unhealthy too. It can also lead to multiple mineral deficiencies!

In brief, the market is flooded with many purifiers like Everpure water filters- they may be good but not the best value for your money. Why not do some research about multi stage water purifiers? They are effective, efficient and evenly priced. The decision is in your hands. Think twice and do not get carried away by any brand name.

Looking out for buying a water purifier? I am sure you must have heard about reverse osmosis water units. Read on to find out about the most basic component of these RO systems - the reverse osmosis membrane.

A reverse osmosis system is essentially made up of a thin, semi permeable, porous membrane. This reverse osmosis membrane has ultra-fine pores on its surface, the size of which basically determines what all things are going to be filtered.

When water is forced to pass through this membrane, it being smaller in molecular size, passes through the membrane and other contaminants being larger in size are blocked and hence separated out from the water.

This basically makes this membrane the most important part of a RO based unit. Broadly speaking, the reverse osmosis membrane is available in two flavors.

- Cellulose Triacetate Membrane (CTA): These membranes are extremely hydrophilic and are ideal for removing antibodies from the water. The problem with these membranes is that they are totally non-protein binding, so they remove proteins also from the water. Moreover, this membrane needs to be disinfected regularly so as to keep bacterial growth in control.

- FTC membranes: These membranes being inorganic in nature are not susceptible to bacterial growth. So they do not need disinfection. But they are more expensive as compared to the CTA ones. The problem with these membranes is that they are prone to be easily damaged by chlorine- a common contaminant in water.

These RO membranes are ultra thin and very sensitive. Thus are vulnerable to damage. But detecting the damaged membrane is a difficult task. If this goes undetected, the microscopic wastes will easily pass through the membrane and hence will not be separated out from the water.

One critical problem with this membrane is that the size of its pore is smaller than that of various naturally occurring minerals. This results into blocking of these minerals and so they are removed from the filtered water. This is known as de-mineralization.

Consuming such de-mineralized water is not recommended. The minerals which are removed by a reverse osmosis membrane are required for the basic functioning of the body. These minerals are calcium, magnesium, sodium, iron etc.

Drinking water is the best source to ensure daily intake of these minerals. Water lacking in these minerals can lead to deficiencies and other health problems.

Multi-stage water purifiers are superior to RO bases units. They are capable of removing all contaminants while retaining the essential minerals at the same time. They are easy to maintain and come in large variety of sizes and colors.

Now that you know about reverse osmosis membrane and how reverse osmosis work, I hope this information will help you in deciding a home water purifier for you. Whatever you select, make a choice soon. Drinking clean water is our body's most basic and important requirement.

How difficult is it to replace an EverPure water filter?

Previous occupant of my home installed an EverPure H-54 water filter to filter the water going to the water dispenser and ice maker of the refrigerator. I've seen these filters online for $55 or so. Is this something that I can easily replace by shutting off the water and using some simple wrenches and screwdrivers? Or should I get it professionally installed?

It's actually very simple to replace. This is a copy and paste from the Everpure website.

How do I remove “used” cartridges and install new ones?

Shut off water and relieve line pressure. For heads with built-in shut-off valve, fully lift handle until it stops.

Hold head firmly. Push upward on cartridge and turn it to left 1/4 turn, until rotation stops.

Pull cartridge out of head.

Align new cartridge lug with head label. Hold head firmly. Insert new cartridge into head.

Turn cartridge to right 1/4 turn until rotation stops.

Turn on water supply. For heads with built-in valve, lower handle.
Note: For head with revolving ring, make sure the valve handle locks firmly into the ring notch.

Flush cartridge by running water through filtered faucet for three minutes to flush cartridge and purge it of air.

Reverse Osmosis Water Filter

Let's face it, the water we drink is as important as the air we breath.

This is why I want to discuss why I don't use the reverse osmosis water filter.

Water is essential for life! We can't be without it. If we didn't have water, we would parish!

That is why I have such a passion for finding the truth about how we can improve the quality of the water we drink and bathe in. Water is priceless. I want to try to educate you about water filters, and in particular, the reverse osmosis filter.

This system of water filtration was very popular at one time. People were so determined to make the water that they drank safe, that companies worked hard to meet those consumers needs.

Thus the advent of the "Reverse Osmosis Water Filter". Another term you could use is water

distillation processor. The end result is distilled water.

Man went centuries drinking pure, fresh water from our lakes and streams. That is until industrialization, and common practices of farming which introduced chemicals, fertilizers and other bad things into our water systems. Man reaped the rewards of not only hydration, which is essential for life, but also took in much needed trace minerals like calcium, magnesium and potassium, which our bodies need naturally. Nowhere in history or science have we read about our bodies need for distilled water.

Distilled water even has a different PH than regular water, making is slightly acidic. Studies show that if we consume an acidic based substance, we produce more hydrogen in our bodies. This results in pulling minerals from our bones and teeth to produce bycarbonate to neutralize the acid. This compounded with the affect of drinking already de-mineralized water can make this a serious situation.

Nowhere on earth do we find naturally distilled water. Why do you think we should drink it on a regular basis? I know my answer to the question.

I already mentioned there are numerous toxic chemicals, fertilizers and other bad things found in our water supplies. For our health, we do need to try to filter them out and make our drinking water safer. I did a lot of research on the different water filter systems and concluded that there aren't any really bad systems, other than the before mentioned product.

Some do nothing more than take out chlorine, rust and lead, making the water more pleasant to drink. But we need to do more than that. We need a system that will do that, plus remove the toxic substances that threaten our health every day. They also need to leave behind the trace minerals that our bodies need to function on a daily basis. Multistage water filtration systems seem to perform the best in all cases.

In conclusion, you don't need to spend the most to get a good system. There are many choices, and many comparisons available to the consumer via the internet. Take advantage of that. Be educated, but if you are like me, steer away from the "Reverse Osmosis Water Filter.

anyone tried rear sea monkeys without using the water purifier #1?

i found some information in www.sea-monkeys.com bout the water purifier. it actually helps the sea monkeys to hatch. but, after i poured the water purifier #1 into the tank, i accidentally contaminate the tank with oil so i disposed the water n refill it with RO (reverse osmosis) water. if i go ahead to add in the instant eggs #2, i wonder will they hatch? anyone ever tried it? i hope someone tried it n is successful. i really hope my sea monkeys won't die. thx for yr help

no it wont work. the "purifier" actually contains salt and a few eggs. remember, seamonkeys are actually brine shrimp, as such, they need salt water to hatch and survive.
about the bleach thing, the bleach solution is for dissolving the egg casing. this is used by people who use seamonkeys(brineshrimp) to feed their fishes. this eliminates the need to separate the eggcasings from the brineshrimp.
getting back to your sea monkeys, to hatch them you'll have to make your own brine solution since you disposed of the "purifier" try 3 tbsp of salt per liter of water. the second package, the egg package, contains some eggs too but you'll have to wait another 24 hours for those to hatch. also, i dont think you need to use RO water

Water Filter Comparisons

Are you planning to buy a water purification system for your home? Looking for some facts revealing reverse osmosis water treatment comparison with other purifiers? Your quest ends here.

Most of the reverse osmosis reviews will only mention about the advantages that such a water treatment system has to offer. The other side of these systems is seldom talked about. This article will primarily focus on those less talked about facts about RO based systems. It will also present a reverse osmosis water treatment comparison analysis.

Knowing the fact that the water supplied to our homes is highly impure and is contaminated with various pollutants like pesticides, cysts, chlorine, lead, metal traces etc., I assume you understand the need to purify it. After all clean drinking water is an essential requirement of our body.

The RO based water purifiers are one of the popular choices. All thanks to the reverse osmosis reviews which mention only half of the story. If you do a fair reverse osmosis water treatment comparison, you will find the following truth:-

- An RO based water purifier is very effective against organic and chemical contaminants. But as compared to the other multi stage water purifiers, it is not able to filter chlorine and pharmaceutical drugs. Unlike RO systems, a multi stage water purifier uses carbon filtration and sub micron filtration techniques which can efficiently filter out virtually all impurities from the water.

- An RO based water system de-mineralizes the water. As opposed to the multi-stage water purifiers which do not tamper the natural form of the water, the RO based filters strip off the minerals from water. These minerals like sodium, calcium, magnesium, iodine etc are present in the natural water. They are good for our health and consuming water lacking in these minerals can lead to deficiencies and other health problems.

- An RO based water system wastes a lot of water. The ratio of the filtered water to the water actually consumed for this filtration process is roughly 1:3. This implies 3 gallons of water will be wasted to produce 1 gallon of filtered water. In contrast to this, multi-stage water purifiers do not waste water. They are economical to maintain too.

- In contrast to the multi stage water purifiers which are customizable and can be easily installed over the counter or under the counter; the RO based units are not easily configurable. They need an additional outlet pipe and need explicit plumbing to provide this outlet near the drainage.

- The cost of the RO based units is unreasonably high as compared to the other multi stage water purifier units.

Now that we have discussed the less talked about side of the RO based units; this completes the reverse osmosis water treatment comparison with other multi-stage purifiers.

Make no mistake about it. Do not simply believe reverse osmosis reviews - do a comparison, find out the truth and make the right choice.

A Look at 2010 and Beyond
Consumers cut back on a lot of things during an economic downturn, but they can only reduce their consumption of food and household products so much.

Water Purifier Filter

To know about a high quality line of filters that can do all this and more – visit my website now.

want to add water purifier to kitchen faucet that has extension line. ?

is there a way to add a water faucet filter to purify water if i have the kitchen faucet that i can pull out?

Yes. Culligan and Pentek both make great undersink water filters that are easy to install. They are relatively inexpensive. They are also easy to maintain.

Berkey Water Filters

Many would still find the title of this article on chlorine water filter somehow weird. Why would anyone still filter a drinking water already chlorinated? Let us find out why.

Briefly about chlorine

Chlorine was introduced in the 1890's as a water disinfectant. It was first used in Europe where water-borne diarrheal diseases were then prevalent. Later, this technique of purifying water with chlorine was introduced to the United States in 1920.

Chlorine is chemically considered as a poison. In fact, it was used as a primary chemical reactant of the earliest versions of chemical weapons in Europe during the First World War.

Ill effects of chlorinated water

Dr. Joseph Price was one of the earliest scientists to study the harmful effects of using chlorine as a biological disinfectant in drinking water in the United States. In the 1960's, he published a book, entitled "Coronaries Cholesterol", showing findings that chlorine is the primary and essential cause of atherosclerosis.

Chlorine promotes increased production of free radicals in the body. When there are excess free radicals in the body, the smooth and normal muscles found in the arterial walls go haywire and start to mutate. This condition eventually leads to the formation of fibrous plaque that may clog or get trapped inside the arteries.

Drinking chlorinated water over an extended period is just like setting on a biological time bomb. The symptoms would not appear until after 20 years of drinking water laden with chlorine.

Medical literature is rich in research findings showing close link between chlorine in drinking water and some forms of cancer. It has already been established that chlorinated water causes bladder and rectal cancer. When chlorine reacts with the organic compounds present in the water, such as leaves, bark, sediments, etc., chlorine forms trihalomethanes (THM's). Most common forms of THM's are chloroform, bromoform, carbon tectachloride and bischlorothane. These compounds are known to encourage the growth of malignant tumor cells along the bladder and rectal walls.

Chlorine is also known to cause breast cancer. A study conducted in Hartford, Connecticut, revealed that women with breast cancers have 50-60% higher levels of organochlorides. These organochlorides are chlorination byproducts produced during water filtration processes in water utilities. Water containing chlorine also causes other major illnesses, such as heart troubles and premature senility.

Protect yourself from the harmful effects of chlorinated water. Most experts suggest using multi-stage water filters designed to eliminate chlorine in the water. Next time you buy your water filter, remember that it must be able to completely get rid of dissolved chlorine in your household water.
