Reverse Osmosis Filter?

I received a bought a new fish tank and was wondering what would happen if i were to attach a reverse osmosis filter directly to the tank?

Neither fish nor plants would do well in pure RO water. They need some mineral content in the water. The usual practice for soft-water-loving animals or plants is to use mostly RO water mixed with a little tap water, or all RO water with a "remineralization" supplement added. (If you're using the RO water to make artificial sea water, the marine salt mix will contain mineral supplements).

Another problem is that RO units for home use are designed for an output (typically) of anywhere from 25 to 200 or so gallons per day. A typical aquarium filter for a home-sized tank should pump something between 100 and 1000 gallons per hour (depending on the size of the tank it's designed for). So the RO filter by itself wouldn't be giving you enough throughput.

Also, since RO filters generally create more "waste" water than "pure" water, your tank would soon be almost empty if only the "pure" water went back in the tank. You would have to make up the lost water from somewhere.

So, while an RO filter is a great thing to have (I wish I had one right now), it's not practical as the main filtration for your tank. It's better to use it for partial water changes, removing maybe 30% to 50% of your water each time, and replacing it with water you've collected from the RO unit.

Can You Believe These Disadvantages of Reverse Osmosis?

As you probably know, reverse osmosis is the method most commonly used to treat household drinking water. What this means is the elements in water that exist naturally, such as anything that causes an unpleasant odor or taste are reduced. It is also used to treat water that may have contaminants that would make it unsuitable for drinking.

How the process works

Reverse osmosis is also called ultra filtration because it moves water through a membrane. The membrane has very small openings that cannot be seen without the aid of a microscope. The water passes through these openings and large items cannot. Sometimes these systems use an electric shock that helps to keep chemicals from coming through.

This is called rejecting the contaminant. When the rejection rates are not set high enough, they may allow some elements to pass through that are not desirable. The rates need to be high enough to reduce toxins or undesired elements to a safe level. There is not always only one contaminant. Sometimes there may be several. All rates have to be reduced.

Does reverse osmosis make water safe to drink?

Reverse osmosis is used because it has been proven to work on both a commercial level and a residential one. One such method can remove salt from seawater. The household variety of reverse osmosis systems put out anywhere from 2 to 10 gallons of treated water a day. If the correct installation is used, these systems can remove many undesirable elements from drinking water, thus reducing the need to buy water, especially for drinking.

Do not buy a unit to treat your water until after it is tested and you are aware of what type of treatment you need. Different systems treat water for different contaminants and you need to find the right one for your water needs.

What Are the Disadvantages of This System?

When you use reverse osmosis for treating your water, it will only treat anywhere from 5% to 15% of the waster it takes in to the system. The remaining water is expelled as wastewater. When it comes to reverse osmosis for home use, they do an excellent job. However, business units require a completely different approach.

The household model rejects the water that contains waste. When this is discarded, it usually goes out through the household drains. It can put a strain on a septic tank because they normally put out 40 to 90 gallons of wastewater a day. This system wastes a lot more water than it puts back.

If you use well water, it can cause the pump to run constantly, thereby running your power bill up to astronomical rates. This also will cause a very high water bill if you do not have a well and depend on city or town supplied water.

Reverse osmosis can be beneficial to remove contaminants from your water and make it safer to drink. However, this process also has drawbacks. Investigative work should be done on the type of system you need before purchasing one.

In the world of HVAC, much ado has been made about whether people should use a heat pump unit in their home or not. Since we're talking about a residential unit, we'll only consider the air cooled heat pump. The air cooled unit works with the split system in most homes, and we don't want to have to worry about drilling holes in the ground, or using boilers and chillers in such a small unit.

You may have heard that a heatpump is supposed to use 1/3 less electricity than conventional resistance heat units in a home. But what makes it worth using a heat pump? Is there a preferred geographical area that is better to use a heat pump? When making the decision, a person should consider as many of the variables as possible.

A heat pump is a variation of a typical air conditioning system. If you understand the heat displacement premise behind making an air conditioner work, you already have the basic understanding of how a heat pump works. An air conditioning unit pulls the heat out of the air in the house using a refrigerant which has been cycled through a condensing unit outside the home. The refrigerant is heated up as it runs through the evaporator coil inside the home... the refrigerant actually evaporates as it draws more heat into it, hence the name; evaporator coil. From there, the refrigerant is pulled through a copper line into the condensing unit outside of the house. The condensing unit then pulls the heat out of the refrigerant and releases it into the air. That is why you can feel warm air coming from the outside unit in the summer time. From there, the refrigerant is compressed and cooled, then cycled through the evaporator coil once again. This process causes cool air to be discharged from your vents inside the house, and warm air to be discharged outside of the home.

Now, what if we were to reverse the cycle just described? What if we could cause a unit to blow cool air on the outside and warm air on the inside? Well the answer is simple. We would have a heat pump. That is in effect, what a heat pump does - it pulls the heat from the outside air, and releases it inside the home. This allows a heat pump to run by using no more electricity than your air conditioner does during the summer, while typical resistance heat costs significantly more to run since it uses a toaster-like burner to heat the air in a home. The heating element draws significantly more amperage than a unit running in heat pump mode.

The problem is that the outside temperature can get too low for the unit to effectively pull heat out of the outside air. That's why your normal, everyday garden variety heat pump has failsafe mechanisms built into it. For instance, there are defrosting mechanisms to keep the refrigerant from getting too cold and seizing up the compressor and causing significant damage which will cost hundreds of dollars to repair. There is also a backup resistance heat coil that kicks in when a sensor on the outside unit determines that the outside temperature is too low for the refrigerant to effectively draw any heat from the air.

With this being said, a person must think about the climate in the winter in their locale before deciding to use a heat pump. Another thing to think about is that summer and winter aren't the only seasons in the year. There are cold snaps both early in the fall and late in the spring. Although one may not use the heat pump for a big portion of the winter, he or she may use it quite a bit in the fall and spring. These things need to be determined before installing one of these units in climates with cold winters.

A heat pump unit costs more than a resistance heat unit, so you need to ask yourself, "Am I going to make up the difference in price through energy savings over the course of the life of the unit?" That is a question for your local air conditioning contractor to answer as much as for yourself to research.

Swro Design and Energy Recovery Part 2: Hydropro Design

Design Requirements
Traditionally Hydropro has always put the needs of the customer into the forefront of its company philosophy. By doing this, Hydropro has always stayed abreast of the latest advancements in technology in the water treatment field. In this case, mostly because of the remote location (nearly everything, including fuel for the diesel generators, is delivered by ship), the most important customer needs were associated with conserving energy and maintaining reliability. Availability of replacement parts was also a major concern due to the remote location and the lead-time required to ship items to the island. Another concern Hydropro had to address was ease of operation and ease of maintenance, as the remote island of Ebye did not have any skilled RO plant operators. The end result would incorporate all these requirements to produce a reliable supply of potable water from a seawater source for the citizens of Ebye.

In the original RFP, KAJUR requested twin 75,000 gpd SWRO units (expandable to 100,000 gpd) designed for a seawater feed of 45,000 mg/l TDS. The proposal presented by Hydropro was for two Seawater Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment units each designed to produce 75,000 gallons per day. Permeate water was projected to be of less than 300 mg/l TDS based on feed water from seawater wells with a maximum TDS of 50,000 mg/l and an SDI of less than 3. Each unit was designed to be easily expandable to a daily capacity of 100,000 gallons by the addition of one pressure vessel containing seven seawater membranes. All instrumentation, piping, valves, headers and pumps were pre-sized to accommodate the expansion.

Each proposed SWRO system consisted of four pressure vessels containing seven membrane elements each arranged in a single, one-pass array. With the expansion, the system would consist of five pressure vessels in a single staged array. Each system was designed to operate at a 30-40% recovery rate, with a maximum trans-membrane (feed to product) pressure of 1100 psi at a feed water TDS of 50,000 mg/l. With a feed water TDS of 46,000 mg/l, the trans-membrane pressure was projected to be approximately 900 psi at startup and 950 psi after three years of operation.

System Design
The final, installed 100,000 gpd Hydropro design consisted of the following major components and unit operations for each SWRO unit:

• Sand and Particulate Filters: Two HYDROPRO Tubular filter units Model STF5M2-400- PVC/150 each consisting of one PVC housing with a 150-micron wedge wire PVC screen for the removal of sand and particles, with automatic purge valves
• Micron Filters: Three heavy-duty filter housings constructed of FRP/PVC and built to ASME Code X, the housings are Eden Model 24EFC each accommodating six (6) 40" long five micron polypropylene cartridges
• RO High Pressure Booster Pumps: Two high pressure feed booster pumps Grundfos Model BM 17-27R (installed in series) - horizontal centrifugal, multi-stage construction of 904L Super Austenitic Stainless Steel, each driven by a 35 HP submersible type motor rated at 460V/60Hz/3Ø utilizing a Soft start motor starter and VFD RO Low Pressure Booster Pump: One booster pump Grundfos Model BM 30-4R - horizontal centrifugal, multi-stage type of 904L Super Austenitic Stainless Steel, driven by a 7.5 HP submersible type motor rated at 460V/60Hz/3Ø controlled by a variable frequency drive
• Membrane Modules: One FRP construction structural frame, five pressure vessels of FRP construction rated at 1200 psi operating pressure, 35 Thin Film Composite membrane elements ¬ 8" x 40", 2205 DUPLEX SS headers for feed and concentrate and Sch. 80 PVC for the permeate headers and low pressure feed, suction and concentrate piping, Allen- Bradley PLC SLC 5/04 based control system - installed in a NEMA 4X enclosure with system switches lights etc. installed on the panel door
• Chemical Feed Systems: One anti-scalant dosing system and one chlorine dosing system
• Freshwater Flush/Membrane Cleaning System

The system skid was designed and fabricated for a compact footprint due to limited installation space and to allow for shipping both units in a single container.
The entire system was pre-assembled as much as possible to minimize field services.

Ro Water Tanks & Well Water Pressure Tanks Increase Your Water On Demand

One of the most effective and commonly used water filtration systems is a Reverse Osmosis water treatment system. Reverse osmosis water filtration works by using pressure to force water through a reverse osmosis membrane, retaining the harmful minerals and particles on one side and allowing the pure, clean, filtered water to pass to the other side. Once the drinking water has been fully processed by an RO system, it is then stored in an RO storage tank. Once stored in a reverse osmosis water tank, the water is ready for use.

One of the pitfalls of using an RO system is the capacity of the RO storage tank. The holding capacity of an RO water tank is dependent on both the inlet water pressure to the tank and the RO tank air pressure. Typically, the RO tank capacity is 50% of the total RO tank volume (empty).  Most residential reverse osmosis systems come rated with a 2.5 gallon RO storage tank, but once the system has actually filled the tank, it could plausibly only provide one gallon or so of water (changes in air pressure contribute to the capacity differences). In order to increase this amount of available water, the purchase of an additional RO water storage tank should be considered.

There are two options to increase your RO tank capacity:

1. Remove the existing smaller tank and replace it with a larger reverse osmosis water storage tank.
2. On existing larger tank systems, simply tee a line to a second tank of any capacity
- The new RO tank must have the same pre-charge as your existing tank.

If you own a house that is not served by a municipal water supply, a private well system is used to provide your home with water. When you use a well for your water supply there are several other components that you need to effectively supply the water to its desired location. 3. How much water will the tank need to store?
4. What is the temperature of the area where the water will be stored (there may be concern for freezing).
5. What are the pressure requirements for the tank?
6. How is water delivered to the well pressure tank, and is it pumped or extracted?

Well pressure tanks do not simply use an empty steel can; they use a flexible bladder or bag placed inside the well water storage tank. A good example of this type of well water storage tank is the Well X Trol water tank by Amotrol. Well water holding tanks contain an interior flexible bladder that flexes every time the water is used, so well pressure tanks can be expected to wear out. Once the well storage tank bladder leaks, the tank reverts to a plain style of pressure tank.
