A portable water purifier can come in handy many times, including the aftermath of a natural disaster or while camping. There is, however something that you need to keep in mind when considering having fresh, clean drinking water and that is there is a difference between filtered water and purified water. All filtered water may not be safe for human consumption and even when using a portable water purifier the water can still hold floating contaminants that can alter the appearance and taste of the water.

There will be a portable water purifier to meet your needs, no matter the reason or the amount of water needed. From small units that fit into the top of a water bottle to much larger ones, big enough to supply purified water to hundreds of people in a short period, a portable water purifier can turn some of the worst types of water into potable water for drinking and cooking. Unless many of the floating particles in the water have been removed, it may not taste or smell very good, even though purified water is usually safe for drinking.

Filtering will remove many of the smallest particulate matter, including metals and some bacteria, but in order to be safe a purification unit will be necessary. Even a portable water purifier can kill all the bacteria and germs living in the water to prevent them from causing disease when ingested.

On The Camping Trail Portable Units Handy

Having a portable water purifier, especially for campers, allows them to have a continuous supply of clean water while on the trail without having to carry large amounts of water with them. Before passing the dirty water through a portable water purifier to completely clean it of dirt, smell and bacteria, first run the water through portable water filters to remove any sediment.

Use of chlorine and iodine are some of the different methods of purifying water, but despite it being safe to drink, these chemicals often leave an unpleasant odor in the water which may not be acceptable to some people. Ultraviolet purifiers use the power of the sun to create heat to kill bacteria, while others use an electrical charge to kill any living things in the water. Using membrane filters small enough to capture bacteria also popular types of portable water purifiers, but require pressure to force the water through the filter.

Are you an avid camper or trekker? As camping and trekking have grown in popularity as fun, frugal activities, a large number of new products designed to improve your camping experience have cropped up in the marketplace. A few suggestions of new products to get you started (all are commonly available at outdoors stores across Canada and the United States):

1) Camping-style French Press. A camping-style French Press is a great way to indulge when you're camping, trekking, or simply spending some quality time outdoors. Similar to a thermal mug, camping-style French Presses incorporate a small filter and press underneath which you place your coffee grounds. Simply fill to the brim with hot water you've purified on the fire and you'll have a delicious indulgence. They are normally very lightweight and lined with metal to help retain heat.

2) Portable water filter. Portable water filters are less of an indulgence than they are a necessity. If you're out camping or trekking, you can't always count on the cleanliness and reliability of the local water source. Portable water filters can be attached to your water bottle so you can always filter water on the go. Depending on the model, the filter portion will either be at the top of the bottle (easier to replace) or at the bottom of the bottle (easier to keep sanitized).

3) Portable water filter bottles are another version of number two. Instead of bringing your own water bottle, a portable water filter bottle combines a bottle and a filter all in one.

4) Fire-starter strips will make lighting your campfire a breeze even when you're cooping with that perennial challenge, wet wood. Normally made of organic and natural ingredients like wool or beeswax, these help get your fire going in a flash. Store them in a sealed plastic bag along with your matches and you'll be raring to go.

5) Portable first aid kit. Portable first aid kits are lightweight and easy to throw into your pack, and you'll never regret having one. A good portable first aid kit should have, at minimum, some antiseptic (to be used with your water filtered-water), bandages, a small splint, moleskin for blisters, anti-allergy medication (in case of a bite or sting), and a cold compress.

What is the best portable water filter to use for hiking / travel?

I'm looking for something that really works well. A purifier, not just a filter. Something .2 micron (or smaller) and with a built-in way to automatically chemically treat the water (iodine/chlorine etc). There are several on the market and I'm looking for other peoples experiences and opinions. Something that could be used full time for weeks at a time on long trips where your only water source is creeks and lakes and in countries with questionable tap water.

ive been on camping for weeks and overseas and never had one.when camping only drink ru8nning water.when overseas always boil or buy bottled water.save some space in ya backpack to
