Tap Water Filtration Systems - Buyer's Guide

Choosing from the many tap water filtration systems for your home can be a chore.   Here is a brief buyer’s guide to help you find the right tap water filter system.

Technology

Reverse osmosis and distillation are old out-dated purification technologies.  They have been replaced by devices that will sit on your kitchen countertop or larger units that fit under the kitchen sink.  There are effective products that attach to your showerhead and without disrupting flow-rate, remove chlorine and other hazardous chemicals that you are exposed to in the shower.

The technology to look for includes granular carbon, adsorption, filtering media to target specific chemical contaminants, ion exchange to target lead and metallic traces, as well as a submicron particle filter.

Similar to reverse osmosis, a submicron particle filter removes parasitic cysts and tiny speck-sized particulates.  But, the step costs less and can be included in smaller devices.  It also prevents the creation of wastewater and prevents waters from cycling around other filtering media.

Tap water filtration systems that include all of those steps are affordable, but not always easy to find.

Price

Price is sometime indicative of quality, sometime not.  Even though reverse osmosis is out-dated, it is still included in many brands.  It can quadruple the price that you pay and is basically unnecessary.

On the other hand, the cheap pitcher filters and those that attach directly to the faucet are mainly chlorine filters.  They do not include enough steps to adequately address the contaminants we are faced with.

The systems that attach directly to the faucet require frequent replacement.  Sometimes, the entire unit must be replaced every three months.  That affects the cost of use and the economic advantages of tap water filtration systems.

Cost of Use

The best purifiers cost less than ten cents per gallon.  Brita, PUR and other products that cost less initially cost double the price per gallon, 20-25 cents.

Reverse osmosis products increase your costs of use, as the membranes are expensive to replace and easily torn.  They also require electricity to function properly and create wastewater that must be properly disposed of.

Look for tap water filtration systems that fully disclose costs like these, before you buy.  If they do not include product performance data, look for a different brand.

Performance

Product performance data sheets also tell you about which contaminants will be removed and to what degree.  They do not lists prescription drugs, which made the news this year when they were found in many facilities around the US, Canada and Europe.

Systems that target chemicals will remove these traces.  Everything works more efficiently in a point-of-use device.  The steps taken by facilities are on such a large scale that contaminant removal cannot be fully effective or completely guaranteed.

The steps to look for are mentioned in the technology section.  My research found one tap water filtration system that included each necessary step.
Remember to compare technology, performance, purchase price and cost of use, before you buy.  That way you will be satisfied with your tap water filtration systems and pleased with the money that you save by not buying bottled water.

How Pure Is Distilled Water: The Truth Revealed

Are you consuming distilled water? Do you know the opinion that health experts have on distil water consumption? This and few other frequently asked questions are answered below. I bet this is going to be a real eye-opener for you.

Why purifying the water is so important?
The water coming out from our kitchen faucets is not at all suitable for consumption. It starts its journey way before it is stored in infection-prone reservoirs of water companies, from where it travels all the way through old and rusty pipes into our home taps.

Believe me, throughout its journey, there are so many possibilities of it getting contaminated; that irrespective of the location where you are staying, I can bet that if you sample some water from your tap, you will definitely find at least 100 different kinds of contaminants in it.

Most common contaminants are chlorine, cysts, bacteria, virus, pesticides, animal feces, bird droppings and all the dirty things that you can think of.

Consuming such contaminated water can lead to numerous health ailments starting from acne and constipation to typhoid, cholera and even cancer. This explains why we need a pure water solution.

Are pure water distillers an effective solution? How pure is distilled water?
Pure water distillers are efficient in removing all types of contaminants from the water. But, they remove the essential minerals found in natural water too.

Water found anywhere on this Earth is rich in some essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, iodine, sodium etc. When water is distilled, these essential minerals are also removed leaving the water which not only tastes bad but is also unhealthy.

What is the health expert's take on consuming distilled water?
It is a known fact that the essential minerals found in natural water are required for general functioning of the body. Drinking water is the best way to ensure regular intake of these minerals in our body. Consuming water lacking in these minerals can lead to multiple mineral deficiencies and various other ailments.
