Pure Water Distillers - The Important Part is What They Can't Do

Pure water distillers might be recommended by some alternative practitioners. Usually, they are trying to sell a bottled brand. But, a few of them truly believe that drinking distilled is better for your health. I disagree.

There is no natural source of distilled water on the planet. All freshwater contains some dissolved minerals, because of the rocks that it comes from. The minerals are essential for electrolyte balance within the body.

A person can die of dehydration while drinking distilled waters! This is especially true if exercising to the point of perspiring. When you perspire, you lose fluids and salt. While that might not be a problem for most people (research indicates that Americans consume far too much sodium), a person who is concerned about their health is more likely to eat healthy foods, which are naturally lower in sodium. So, sweating, loss of sodium and not consuming the right kinds of fluids could cause serious health problems.

But the mineral content is just the first point. The second point has to do with the "contaminants" that are removed by a pure water distiller.

Distillation was originally developed during a time when the only potential contaminants were those that were naturally occurring. Today, the primary sources of freshwater contamination are industry, agriculture and treatment facilities.

Industrial spills and leaks have resulted in benzene and MTBE contamination. Agricultural runoff results in pesticide, herbicide and cyst contamination, as well as e-coli and other types of bacteria.

Treatment facilities are very good at targeting e-coli and most other pathogens, except for cysts. They get rid of the bacteria through the use of chlorine or other disinfection methods. So, the facilities cause two types of contamination. They are the chemicals used to disinfect, and the byproducts created when those chemicals interact with bacteria. Those are caused THMs or DBPs.

A pure water distiller could get rid of e-coli, cysts and other pathogens, but would have no effect on the chemical contaminants. They would simply pass into the collection pot along with the steam.

The same is true of expensive reverse osmosis units. They were also developed at a time when the primary sources of contamination were naturally occurring. They were never able to address the issue of bacterial contamination. They can remove cysts, lead and mineral deposits, but not chemicals.

From a health standpoint, the best types of beverages to drink are waters that have a trace mineral content. A pure water distiller cannot give you those kinds of beverages. A multi-stage home purifier can.

They call them selective filtration devices. They are able to remove cysts, lead and chemical contaminants. Most naturally occurring minerals are allowed to pass through. If there is no naturally occurring mineral content, the devices improve the mineral content by exchanging ions of lead and copper, which are found in most pipelines, for ions of sodium and potassium. Pure water distillers are expensive, difficult to clean and ineffective against modern-day contaminants. Selective filtration is the right choice today.

You might think the mechanics of the system is more important, but the way I see it the mechanics or parts of the unit can be repaired or replaced, but if the water filter cartridge is defective and you don’t know it, you could be drinking contaminated water when you thought you were drinking safe water.

Or another thought is if you bought the water purification system because you thought the water filter cartridge was one that was removing all the dangerous contaminates from the water, and the cartridge only had the technology to remove a few of the toxic chemicals in our water supply you would be very disappointed to find out you bought the wrong unit.

There are many units on the market, that don’t remove the nasty things in our water. Take for example a reverse osmosis system. Unless the reverse osmosis system has additional filters in combination with the membranes used for the reverse osmosis process, you are only removing the minerals in the water.

There is controversy over leaving the minerals in or taking them out of the water. I actually believe the minerals are good for us, thus I don’t want to take them out. Taking the minerals out will change the water from alkaline to acidic, causing our bodies to pull the minerals from our teeth and bones to compensate for the minerals that are not in the water.

Also the more acidic products we put into our bodies the more our bodies will produce free radicals. Free radicals are linked to cancer, because cancer cells grow in an acid environment. I don’t know about you, but if drinking water with natural minerals in it will help protect me from cancer growing in my body, I want that kind of water. So leave the reverse osmosis systems in the store. They aren’t good for removing the other dangerous chemicals that are molecularly smaller than water anyway, such as pesticides and herbicides.

If a unit has only one type of water filter cartridge you can be sure it won’t filter out everything that needs to be filtered out. You need more than one media to filter the various contaminates in our water. The granular activated carbon filters out a lot of contaminates such as chlorine, but even with the carbon filter many dangerous chemicals get through the filter.

The best water purification unit to purchase is one with a carbon filter, a sub micron filter, a multi block filter and an ion exchange, to filter out the heavy metals like lead. All of these filters in combination make for the best water filter cartridge technology on the market today.
