Best Water Filters

Following on from previous articles I would like to explain water filters and magnetic water conditioners. It is useful to know how each of these work and the advantages and disadvantages of each to make an informed decision if you were to purchase one.

Water Filters

Water filters are not only good for helping to soften water, but are also useful to remove unwanted contaminants and ensure that your drinking water is clean of any suspended particles. It should be noted that these days water quality from treatment works is usually of very high quality and unlikely to need further treatment. However, if you require even higher purity water then a water filter can be a good choice...and some people say it tastes slightly better as well! There are several different types, and each will be explained below:

• Granulated, activated carbon water filters - The the simplest type of filter are portable filters that are found in jugs. They remove chlorine, large particles and parasites. They are easily purchased from most department stores and are great if you have a low budget as they are reasonably cheap. A disadvantage is that they have a short filter life and are unable filter out certain bacteria and chemicals.

• Carbon block, activated carbon water filters - Built-in to the water supply in your home, the disadvantage of these filters is that they are more expensive than granulated types as described above. However, they do not need to be replaced as often and generally give better filtration.

• Reverse osmosis water filters - For the best form of water filtration available these are hard to beat. They work by passing the water through a semi-permeable membrane, which filters out almost every contaminant. Although they are more expensive than other types of filters they have reasonably low running costs. Once installed they can be used to filter water to the whole house.

• Combination Systems - This filter has become available in recent years and are seen as an alternative to reverse osmosis systems. They have a number of different filters, and each filtration process removes different contaminants.

• Ceramic carbon water filters - To filter out a broad range of contaminants from the water supply these are effective as the filter is comprised of a ceramic and a carbon part. Some are infused with silver, as this is a good antibiotic and reduces the number of micro-organisms present. These filters are good value for money and are built-in to the home water supply and in a typical house they require replacing about every 12 months.

• Alkaline Water Machines - It is a good system for those with environmental illnesses where there is too much acid in the body as this system not only filters your drinking water but it makes it more alkaline. It has effective filtration but it can be expensive and it wastes a lot of water during the filtration process.

Magnetic Water Conditioners

Electromagnetic water conditioners are a relatively new invention. They work by passing water through a magnetic field, the calcium and magnesium ions are altered in such a way that they loose their ability to cause scale. This has a number of benefits and although the water is not technically soft, it has the useful properties of soft water. This means that it won't cause hard water deposits and will increase heating efficiency as well as lengthening the lifespan of any clothes washed in the conditioned water.

As calcium is an important dietary element, the fact that conditioned water still retains its calcium content is an added benefit.

Should I let muddy well water run through my whole-house water filters, or wait until the well fills up higher?

My house uses well water, and when it rains the well fills with dirt, and the water stops running in the house. So I turned the water off, but when I turn it back on, the clear cylindrical case housing the filters fills with muddy water. If I wait, will the well fill higher and dissipate the mud, or can I turn it on now? I want water!

If your getting dirt into your well then you have a serious problem with it. Yes it will clog up the filters, but more importantly you could get sick from that water. Sounds like you need to have some well repairs done. In my 21 years of where I'm living my well water has always been crystal clear, I don't even need filters.

Water purification systems, most of them, are reliable. This helps get rid of almost all the impurities and contaminants there is in your water source. Most of them are even backed by certifications and testes conducted by reputable organizations.

It is interesting to note that some air purifying units actually use the same system and technology used by water filtration units. This arises many questions are to whether or not it will be as effective. If it works in water, will it also work just as good in air?

Before anything else, we will first get to the bottom of why there is a need to use this machine. This is not really a household staple or anything but it is a good machine to have at home in order to lessen pollution. This might be an indispensable appliance especially when you are living in big, polluted and cramped cities.

Others say it is not really a reliable machine and there is no need to use one. But EPA has suggested this is a 3rd way to lessen indoor pollution. This is to provide a safer haven for you and your family. If you are a smoker, consider having one in your household.

Most of them use the same filtration system used in water such as carbon filter. It does work quiet well since it has undergone stringent rules and regulations. But like the filtration units in water, you also have to choose carefully. Not all of them are good. Some are just pure hype.

To put your worries at ease, most are good. In ALA Health House Standards, most of the tested air purification units have surpassed expectations which mean they can effectively clean pollution at home. In addition to that, these filters can get rid of allergens that might trigger lung problems and diseases.

A few of them are also endorsed by these organization so if you are setting your sights on this household equipment, you have to find one that really works and one that has been backed by a reliable organization.

You also have a few options such as a whole house filtration unit or a just a room of filtration system. That depends on your needs. In this day and age, this machine can help us live a healthier life. If you have water filters at home, stretch your health consciousness further by getting an air purifier.

"If you cannot buy a car that has not been put through various kinds of safety testing, you should avoid a water treatment unit that has not been tested and verified."

Do you shop for the cheapest home water filter or a "discounted" home water treatment unit, or do you look for the one that can do the job right?

Has the cheaper water treatment unit been verified and tested for its performance?

What criteria do you use when choosing the right water treatment?

This is a health issue.

Whether you are looking for the best distiller for your home or the best water purifier for your camping need, it is important that you buy a unit that has been tested and verified by an independent organization like the NSF International, Water Quality Associations, or Underwriters Laboratories.

These three organizations work in concert so an approval by one is most like good for the others.

NSF International tests and certifies drinking water treatment devices to the standard appropriate for the technology of the product. NSF does not "rate" or "rank** water treatment systems, rather each system is tested against its own claims.

Some people will rather walk into a store and just buy one on display or one that is recommended by the sales people.

That's okay.

But if you have tested your water and know exactly what you need to remove or reduce from your water, you should check the labels on the filter to be sure it has the NSF/ANSI label.

NSF Standards are categorized as follows:

NSF/ANSI Standard 42 - Aesthetic Effects NSF/ANSI Standard 53 - Health Effects NSF/ANSI Standard 58 - Reverse Osmosis NSF/ANSI Standard 44 - Cation Exchange Water Softeners NSF/ANSI Standard 55 - Ultraviolet Microbiological Water Treatment Systems NSF/ANSI Standard 62 - Distillation Systems NSF/ANSI Standard 177 - Shower Filtration Systems

So, if you are looking for best water filters that can remove heavy metals from your drinking water, you need a filter that has been verified and tested for the ability to remove or reduce the contaminants. Another example is that not many water filters have been tested and certified to remove arsenic in water. NSF certified very few water filter brands for arsenic reduction.

Any filter can remove solids or contaminants but by how much?

NSF-certified water filters and other treatment units have been rigorously tested for claims to reduce contaminants to a level that is safe to drink. If you are concerned with arsenic or other metals in your water, your first consideration is to look for one with proven performance; then think about the short time cost and the long time benefits.

A cheap filter now may cost you more in the future.

While there are man players in the water purifier, not every manufacturer produces products that are suited for you.

With recent reports in the media regarding tap water and its dangers along with scams, every person sees a need for a water purifier. The trick lies in not picking the first water purifier that comes your way.

One will have to carefully choose a water purifier based on a lot of research. The fact that water purifiers are absolutely necessary in today’s world is evident by the statistic that shows that fifty percent of American population suffers from some kind of water-borne disease. Get a water filter today to ensure the safety of your family and yourself.

Brita water filters are a company that has been producing water filters for quite some time now. This company has been producing water filter purification systems for close to forty years now.

Brita water filters are among the lower cost filters in the market today. However, the cost must not have a bearing on your choice. The cost is one of the last things to be considered. One must be worrying more about the kind of technology involved.

Distillation and reverse osmosis are some of the methods used even to this day. These are not good methods of filtering as they remove all the essential minerals needed by the body. If these minerals are not available, the body tries to get them form other sources leading to serious health risks.

Another contaminant that good water filters must remove would be chlorine. Chlorine is added as a disinfectant.

Chlorine is a dangerous chemical to be added in water. It vaporizes much before water and when one takes a bath, the steam is filled with chlorine. Chlorine vaporizes to form chloroform.

This seeps in the bloodstream through open pores and causes health problems. Chlorine also reacts with algae and other organic matter to form THM’s or trihalomethanes.

Brita Water filters are very effective at trapping chlorine. They reduce chlorine content in water.

However, Brita water filters do not have the necessary technology to ensure that the THM’s and VOC’s or volatile organic compounds are filtered. The best water filters need to have special qualities to be able to filter these contaminants out. A special kind of resin is needed and very few filters on the market have the technology needed.

Brita water filters can cost up to $217 for the faucet filter type, for subsequent years the cost may be around $180.

How does the Katadyn Water Filter compare with the other ones on the market today? This brand obviously receives a lot of attention, but popularity definitely doesn't mean it's the best.

If you are interested in these purifiers, one in particular you might look into is their pocket water filter, and this is one of the more known filters they offer.

Katadyn Water Filters are built of very durable material enabling them to withstand harsh conditions, perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. The company has been around since nineteen twenty eight, and they obviously have plenty of experience in the industry, which is always a plus.

In fact, this is the only filter that comes with a lifetime warranty, which shows a lot of confidence in its' quality.

It is capable, at least according to the company, of getting rid of 1/5 microns certainly among the best anywhere. Also, this is able to produce as much as one quart every sixty seconds.

The cartridge is able to handle as much as thirteen thousand gallons of water, again more than adequate. The Katadyn Bottle Water Filter is another one you might look into, as this is great for giving you pure water no matter where you are. If you are on the go a lot, this is one you should check into.

It is able to eliminate up to one microns, meaning anything smaller will pass through. However, since it's just a bottle purifier, and you probably will not be using it at home, and in great quantities, this should be sufficient. You might not want to use it everyday, but for every now and then it's good enough. It's capable of producing .2 quarts every sixty seconds.

It sells for roughly forty dollars, although this will be slightly different depending on which website you buy it from. You should definitely shop around and do some quick comparison shopping before purchasing your Katadyn Water Filter, because the site you buy it from definitely makes a difference.

How safe is the water you are drinking? If you use one of those pitchers with Brita water filters in it you may not have as safe of water as you could get using a different filtering method. Of course using any filter is better than drinking water right out of the faucet, but wouldn’t you rather have all unhealthy substances removed, than just a portion of them.

You may be using Brita water filters because they are the best selling filters you can buy. Notice I did not say they were the best water filters you could buy, only that they are the best selling. One of the reasons they earn that title is they sell more filters than anyone else. And one of the reasons they sell more is the initial cost to purchase one is less.

The initial cost may be less expensive, than other brands and models, like an Aquasana countertop model, but that is where the cost savings ends. It costs about 22 cents a gallon to purify a gallon of water in those Brita pitchers, but it only cost 9 cents per gallon in the Aquasana counter top model.

Plus the Aquasana filter removes more dangerous contaminates. Those water pitchers remove some contaminates, but the filters are so small they cannot possibly filter out all the dangerous chemicals in our water supply today. They don’t filter out the THM’s, or chlorination byproducts. These harmful THM’s trigger the free radical production in our bodies, which are highly carcinogenic and cause damage at the cellular level in the form of cancers.

So don’t just look at what models are the least expensive in the beginning to buy. Look at the long-term cost of operating and look at the performance data sheets to find out what they remove from your drinking water.

If the performance data sheets don’t list a certain contaminate on their sheet, you can almost always be assured the dangerous chemical is still in your water after it goes through their filter. If in doubt write them or email them and ask them if you are in question of any particular contaminate.

What ever water purification product you use, whether it be Brita water filters, Aquasana water filtration systems or any other method of purification check out their web sites and compare total costs, both initial cost and cost of filters including how many gallons of water they filter. Also find out the percentage of removal for all contaminates and decide for your self which system is best.

And remember just because Brita water filters are the best selling, they are not the best at filtering out dangerous contaminates.
