A Culligan water purifier is certainly very popular today. Many people are choosing to invest in this water purifier fro their home to improve their health.

However, just because an appliance is popular doesn't necessarily make it the best. Here are the pros and cons of the Culligan water purifier and how effective it is at removing the harmful chemicals from your water.

First of all, Culligan has been in the water purifying business for over 65 years, and they certainly understand the importance of clean water. Remember, our bodies are actually over 70% water, and this liquid is also the only method the body has to cleanse itself. With this in mind, realize that a home water purifier system is one of the most important and crucial appliances you can own for your home.

Tap water in many cities contains harmful chemicals and parasites that, if digested into our system, can cause bad health. Some of these harmful substances include Cryptosporidium and Giardia. These two parasites have proven to cause flu like symptoms and even more serious illnesses.

Despite this, the EPA allows these substances into our water supply. Of course, this doesn't take into account the hundreds of other harmful substances in our water supply.

Now, you can either force your body to cleanse itself, or you can do the smart thing: buy a water purifier to do the job for you. Most water purifiers are very effective at eliminating these harmful substances from our water supply. But how effective is the Culligan water purifier?

A Culligan purifier provides you with softer, better tasting water than the average tap water. Also, when making tea or coffee, you will notice that your beverage is clear as opposed to cloudy.

The Culligan water purifier is very easy to install and maintain; it requires virtually no installation knowledge on the part of the buyer. Just a quick Google search will provide hundreds of testimonials attesting to the effectiveness of the Culligan water purifier.

Of course, you need to do your due diligence before making a purchase, because Culligan offers many different kinds of water pufferies to suit different purposes. Also, they were recently awarded the water treatment contract for the world's tallest skyscraper, the To Dubai tower, which is currently being constructed.

The Culligan purifier brands have received certification by WQA (Water Quality Association), NSF (National Sanitation Foundation), UL (Underwriters Laboratories) and the CA Department of Health Service.

The bottom line: the Culligan water purifier is very effective at removing the harmful chemicals and parasites from your water. If you are in the market for a water purifier, the Culligan should definitely be at the top of your list. Yes, it costs some money, but if your health is important to you, it is well worth the investment.

Industry, agriculture and the general public use over 70,000 different chemicals. Many of which can be found in our environment today, polluting the air we breathe, the soil in which we produce our crops, our lakes, rivers and streams. Many of these toxic contaminants are finding their way to our drinking water sources.

Amazing as it may seem, municipal water treatment facilities are only required to test for 68 of these contaminants. 51% of the U.S. population do not believe that federal laws governing drinking water quality are strict enough. Many people today drink bottled water or use drinking water filters.

Bottled water is heavy to handle, inconvenient and expensive to buy. Most bottled water is of good quality. Some is not as “pure” as they would like us to believe. The Natural Resources Defense Council studied a number of bottled waters and found the vast majority of the waters tested to be good quality drinking water. Approximately 25% was actually nothing but tap water. A few of the waters tested were found to contain contaminants of health concern.

The source of bottled water can be misleading at times. Just because the label displays a picture of a mountain stream, this doesn’t mean it was the source of the water. Read the label and the cap of the bottle, usually the actual source will be indicated. If your intention is to use bottled water as an alternative to tap water, purchase the high quality waters.

The other option is a water filter. There are over 400 companies that manufacture and sell water filtration products that treat contaminants found in our drinking water. Most of these products only reduce chlorine to some degree. Only a few companies produce filters that actually reduce pesticides, herbicides and other chemical contaminants of health concern.

NSF International (National Science Foundation) tests and certifies water purification filters to meet certain standards and all claims of performance the manufacturer makes. Any manufacturer of water filtration products that meet the NSF standards are proud to advertise that fact. NSF certifies what the filtration device can reduce, this does not mean the contaminants listed are in your water supply.

Choosing a water filtration system can be tricky to say the least. There are a number of factors to consider in comparing drinking water filters. The first consideration should be the NSF Certification. Always review the NSF Certification of the product to verify that it will meet your needs. Manufacturer’s certifications can be viewed on the NSF website. www.nsf.org

Quality is a key factor in choosing any drinking water filtration system. A quality system will last for years, saving replacement cost. Quality systems do not come cheap, but in the long run they are definitely the best buy and offer more value in contaminant reduction. Most high quality systems are very efficient, and reduce contaminants to the highest degree. Always look for a system that is certified to reduce Bacterial Cysts, Chlorine, Heavy Metals, Herbicides, Pesticides and a vast array of other contaminants.

Also check the lifespan of the filter itself, as replacement filters can be very costly. If the filter has a high capacity rating it will last longer, requiring fewer filter changes, therefore reducing costs.

Loose carbon filters should not even be considered as they are a breeding ground for bacterial growth, have a very short filter lifespan and are very ineffective.

Solid carbon block filters are highly effective, do not remove the healthy minerals from water, doesn’t require electricity and generally have a high capacity rating. Check the micron rating, 0.5 is is very good. A 0.5 micron filter will effectively reduce particulate matter and bacterial cysts. The NSF certification will tell you which contaminants the filter will reduce and to what degree.

Some people prefer reverse osmosis which can reduce additional contaminants. Please note: reverse osmosis removes minerals from the water. It’s a good idea to take a vitamin/mineral supplement when using this type of filter on a regular basis to replace the healthy minerals removed from the water. Reverse Osmosis also reduces fluoride, which is a good thing. There is no need for fluoride in your drinking water.

Determine what technology is used in the pre-filters and the after filter. Many reverse osmosis units use solid carbon block technology in addition to the RO membrane. An additional filter, such as a solid carbon block, is recommended just prior to the faucet. Again, check the NSF Certification and take into consideration the filter life capacities..

A Brita water purifier is a very popular water purifier model today. However, just because a machine is popular doesn't necessarily make it the best buy for you.

Many other factors come into play with a water purifier purchase, such as how large a space do you have available for it, how much water you will be using everyday, what kind of taste you want, and other important variables. Here is a consumer review to help you determine if the Brita water purifier is right for you.

First of all, Brita is a Germany-based company that provides safe water for consumption. It generally is know for its good, pure tasting water and effectiveness at removing the harmful chemicals for out water supply.

A Brita water purifier is very effective at removing chlorine from the water supply (one of the most harmful substances that seep into our tap water) and it also virtually eliminates sediment. Some still get in, but there is almost no form of purification that will remove 100% of every harmful substance.

A Brita Water purifier eliminates up to 98% of lead, reduces copper, mercury and cadmium. Another major plus for the Brita is that the filter is very easy to install into the water purifier.

The unit will also help reduce Benzene, and Toluene. It works on RO and purifies water as well.

Here is a list of the harmful effects that chemicals in our tap water can have on the body, and why you abosutely need to purchase a water purifier to improver your health:

Lead: Lead is a corrosion of the household plumbing, erosion of natural deposits. It can actually prevent bodily and mental development in young children, and has been proven to lead to high blood pressure in older kids and adults.

Copper: This is caused by corrosion of household plumbing, erosion of natural deposits. This is known to bring about gastritis problems, and even kidney problems in some cases. This is another harmful substance you absolutely must eliminate to achieve good health.

Mercury: Is caused by the erosion of natural deposits, runoff from landfills and cropland. This can also lead to kidney damage.

Brita manufactures and retails many different water purifier models. Here is a list of them and some factors that hopefully will help you make an informed decision about which is right for you.

The Brita® Dispenser Optimax: This one is perfect for larger families, as it can handle a much bigger supply and usage of water.

The Brita® Water Filtration Dispenser: This is NSF certified to reduce the harmful contaminants that may be in your water, no matter whether it be city water or well-water.

The Brita® filter: It is not intended to purify water, so do not purchase for your home if your main objective is to eliminate chemicals and other harmful substances.

A Brita water purifier will help your water to taste much better than the regular tap water, and it will also dramatically improve your health. They are generally very easy to install and use.

Remember this: A Brita water purifier is certainly very effective at improving your health. However, there are other competitors out there that are likewise very good. This is a list of the benefits of the Brita, and now it's up to you to decide which model is best for your health.

The important thing is that you just make a decision, and begin using a water purifier as fast as possible. Don't put off improving your health any longer!

Are shower head water filters really as important as drinking water filters? Charles Strand, founder and president of Sun Water Systems says that shower head filters are more important.

In the bathroom, when the door goes shut and the tap goes on, chemicals in the water are vaporized. They build up in the air more quickly than the steam. Water filters for shower heads trap the chemicals before they can enter the air.

For people with asthma or other respiratory problems, shower head water filters are practically a necessity. Chlorine vapor is an irritant that triggers attacks and can lead to inflammation of the respiratory tract. Just think about people who work with the chemicals. They wear masks to protect themselves from the fumes.

You can't logically wear a mask in the bathroom, but shower head filters can protect you. Inhaled chemicals are not the only problem with showering in unfiltered water.

You may know that the pores of your skin dilate in warm water. They open up. Chemicals can pass through your skin and enter the blood stream in that way. Think about the patches that people wear on their skin to provide consistent medication through out the day, the nicotine patch for example.

Without water filters for shower heads, more chemicals enter your body through your open pores than you would get form drinking a gallon of unfiltered water. Filtered drinking water protects you from consuming chemicals and other contaminants. Effective shower head water filters protect you from inhaling or absorbing those contaminants through your skin.

That's why the water experts say that shower head filters are more important than drinking water filters, but the reason they initially became popular is because of the cosmetic benefits. Hairstylists have been suggesting them for about the last ten years.

Chlorine dries out the hair and the scalp. It bleaches out the color and can interact with hair dyes causing your hair to have a greenish or orange tint. Water filters for shower heads containing carbon and other natural filters block the chlorine. Your hair feels softer and looks healthier. Your color will remain true for longer periods of time.

The nicer salons use shower head water filters in their wash areas. It just makes sense. At one time, chlorine (basically bleach) was a common ingredient in hair dye. The experts learned that chlorine is harsh. It damages the hair and irritates the scalp.

The newest hair dyes contain less irritating ingredients, but top hair designers realized that chlorine in the water could also be a problem. The chlorine content in tap water is sometimes higher than what you would find in a swimming pool. As the news spread, shower head filters became the rage.

You may be surprised to learn that water filters for shower heads are not that expensive and they are well worth the investment. The dual or multi-stage units block more chemicals than the single stage. They may be a little more difficult to find, but they are worth it.

Just remember that once you start using shower head water filters, you will never want to bathe in unfiltered water again. The water just feels better.

Let’s face it, we all know our supply isn’t as pure as it should be, but did you realize just how bad it has got? A water purifier is becoming more of a necessity than ever before.

A home water purification system will be one of the best health investments you can make, so you want to make sure it is the most effective one, especially with new synthetic pharmaceutical drugs being the hardest to get rid of and the most toxic.

You don’t want to be drinking other people’s medication or lead or chlorine, so selecting the best water purifier is vital. It is a fact that you have a 93% higher chance of getting cancer if you consume chlorinated water.

It is best to avoid reverse osmosis systems as they strip the water of its natural trace minerals like potassium and calcium, and also many toxins still get through due to their inadequate filter.  In addition they waste an astonishing amount, up to two thirds.

Also forget about using bottled water as apart from being astronomically expensive it has been shown to be no better than the tap variety and has almost no regulation. The environment will thank you too for not adding to the 60,000,000 plastic bottles thrown away each day in the US!

The most cost effective ones are multi-point filtration using an activated carbon filter for the best water purification possible. An ion exchange and sub micron filtering will remove 99% of all the contaminants including the prescription drugs, and crucially leave in those essential trace minerals.

For a home treatment system to be effective, it has to have the latest technology and a company behind it that keeps up with the new toxins that we are exposed to. Look for good consumer reviews and a company that only makes water purifier products and nothing else.

That way you can be assured that you will always be protected and that you are doing your best to safeguard your health not only now but for the future too.

In addition any contamination outbreaks will no longer have to be of concern as you will have safe and pure water!

Suppose that you are a new mother, one who has just read that ingestion of water containing nitrates can damage the health of an infant. Although your husband has just left for the store that stocks water filter replacement cartridges, you wonder if you and your husband should go out and purchase some bottled water. Would such an action eliminate from the baby's diet all possible sources of nitrate?

No it would not. A parent who wants to avoid giving food or water with nitrates to an infant needs to do more than simply taking the time to purchase bottled water. Once nitrates make their way into the soil, they can travel down to the level of the ground water. By using water filter cartridges, a homeowner can all but abolish any concerns about nitrates in the tap water.

Suppose that you are a new father, one who has set aside time to look at the available water filter replacement cartridges. Whether you are driving to a location that stocks such cartridges, or whether you are examining the online information on such cartridges, you probably have one question foremost in your mind: "How much do these water filter cartridges cost?"

The consumer who needs to replace the existing cartridge in a water filter system typically wants to find a discounted product. Indeed there are water filter replacement cartridges that can be purchased at a lower than normal price. Of course, someone who hopes to choose wisely, when selecting a replacement cartridge for a water filter system, should study more than just the price of the available cartridges.

Once a cartridge needs to be replaced, the health of those drinking the water that flows through the old cartridge could be in danger. In order to do away with that danger, an old cartridge needs to be replaced in a fast and efficient manner. That fact should be weighed against the asking price for any of the replacement cartridges on the market today.

By the same token, consumers need to understand that not every cartridge that has been made for use in a filter system is identical to all the other cartridges on the market. Tap water can contain many different types of contaminants. By purchasing wisely, a homeowner can feel secure about buying the right sort of cartridge for his or her water filter system.

The homeowner might want to buy a carbon block cartridge. The carbon in those cartridges acts like a sponge. It soaks-up the contaminants in the water. That carbon comes from natural sources-coconut shells, coal products and wood.

A homeowner might live in an area that was recently inundated by flood waters. Such a homeowner would have reason to worry about the presence of chlorine in the tap water. That homeowner might want to buy a water filter cartridge that could aid with the detection of chlorine in the drinking water.

Whenever a homeowner looks to well water as a source of tap water, that homeowner must be especially conscious of the dangers posed by flood waters. Flood waters increase the likelihood that chlorine could enter the well water (and thus the tap water). After a flood, a homeowner should not forget about the importance of water filter replacement cartridges.

Of course, even a homeowner without a well should consider investing in a water filter system. That homeowner should not ignore the importance of water filter cartridges. When functioning properly, such a cartridge can eliminate asbestos, copper, lead and mercury from the tap water. Still, when a homeowner ignores the need to replace such a cartridge, he or she puts at risk the health of all those residing in the home with the old cartridge.

Failure to heed advice about water filter replacement cartridges can cause the inhabitants in a home to get dry skin or GI problems. They might also report to a physician the development of reproductive problems. Water contaminants can cause any of those problems.

A tap that delivers pure, good tasting drinking water can free a homeowner from concerns about contaminants that might impair the health of those in the home. A water filtration system that receives a replacement cartridge on a regular basis, one that uses activated carbon filters and ion exchange micron filtration, can bring safe water into the home.

For that reason, insurance against possible health problems can be found among the available water filter cartridges. A guarantee of continued benefits from a water filter system with such a cartridge goes only to those willing to look, on a regular basis, at the available water filter replacement cartridges.

The filtration and purification processes are highly important not only in the context of muddy water as even the clearest creek may contain micro-organisms harmful for our bodies. With the invention of the drinking water purifier we do not have to worry about the metals, the germs, bacteria, fungi and protozoa present in our water. New products are release every single day but most of them relay on old proven system. There are various types of drinking water purifier, some relying on filtration and some others on the use of disinfectants like chlorine, ozone or iodine. In this article I am going to concentrate on one filtration method, Reverse Osmosis.

R/O (reverse osmosis) is a filtration method that more and more people are using. This filtration method will produce very clean water. These filter us a complex process of water filtration that use several treatment stages in the cleaning process and that is why they are known as "ultra purification" filters. For those who want a simple under sink system or maybe a water purifier system for the entire house, these filters are a perfect unless you don't have limited supply of water. In that case, you should try something else. More on that later.

The R/O system works in two steps:

1. The first step in the filtration process is the removal of the largest residual particles. This particles are removed by activate carbon and a filter sock. The carbon need to be changed from time to time, to function as it is supposed to.

2. The second step is when water is pushed at very high pressure through a membrane that only allows the water molecule and not the impurities to pass. The clean water end up in a holding tank and the impurities are flushed away to the waste water container. You need to use a holding tank since the R/O filtration is a slow process and take some time to finish.

Before you decide to set up a Reverse Osmosis system for the treatment of you drinking water, there are a few things you should know about.

* The system will not protect you against the micro-organisms in the water. That means that you have to test the water to know about how good/bad it is. For that, you can by a home test kit or send the water to a laboratory for analysis. When you have the data, you can decide what kind of filtration system you should use.

* As mention earlier, the filtration process is a slow process. Only about 15 percent of the water that you are using turns to drinking water quality. The rest is flush away. That mean that if there are any limitations on the water source that you are using, maybe the Reverse Osmosis system is not the right solution for you.

Installation:

You can install the system by yourself if it is only for a single water faucet. If you are planning for a whole house purification system, then it would be best if get some professional help.

Summary:

For those who want a simple under sink system or maybe a water purifier system for the entire house, these filters are a perfect unless you don't have limited supply of water. The first step in the filtration process is the removal of the largest residual particles. The clean water end up in a holding tank and the impurities are flushed away to the waste water container. The system will not protect you against the micro-organisms in the water and as I mention earlier, the filtration process is a slow process. Only about 15 percent of the water that you are using turns to drinking water quality.

We continue to hear about problems with substances found in water systems. Water companies remove most of the harmful substances but unfortunately, too many harmful things remain in our drinking water. Home water filters are being installed in more and more homes across the country. As far back as 1995, up to forty-five million Americans were receiving drinking water that was not up to health standards. This included water that was contaminated by bacteria, high lead content and herbicide contamination.

There are many possible sources of contamination in drinking water. However, remember there is something we can do. Home water filters will remove ninety-nice percent of all contaminants that are found in municipal water systems. We owe it to our families to do something about this major health issue sweeping the country. You will feel better knowing you are doing your part to protect your family.

Let us get back to the many possible ways that drinking water becomes contaminated. Farm run off such as fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides are a major culprit. These leech into the water table and eventually find their way into our drinking water. Fluoride has been added to water but it is not a safe additive either. Bacteria and other parasites find their way into our drinking water as well. Good home water filters will prevent these from getting into our water we use at home.

So, how do water filters work? Filters can be attached to the faucet or right to the incoming water source. One of the best types of filters is the carbon block and granular carbon filters. Water flows through the carbon filters and the filters block the contaminants. Activated carbon is considered the best filter for removing harmful contaminants from your drinking water.

Other top rated filters include multi media block filters. These particular home water filters use activated carbon along with other advantages to filter out the harmful chemicals and bacteria. This combination filter is considered an even better filtering system.

The most important thing to remember is that we can do something about the state our drinking water. First, farmers can stop using dangerous pesticides and herbicides as we now know that they can find their way into our drinking water supply. By taking care of the environment, we can work towards improving our water supply. In addition, we can install home water filters and be sure that our families are drinking clean safe water.

Sooner or later, if we think seriously about the benefits of installing Home Water Purifiers we will have to compare actual offers. Of course we know that suitable devices are needed for protecting the health of our household as we read in selected official references.

We have to look at advertised commercial products and try to make up our minds as to which specific type is preferable.

It would help if we could follow a logic Guideline, an acceptable method capable of advising us how to see clearly into the important issues.

Here I would like to do just that: in this article you will find how to first establish the important items to compare and then how to do this in practice.

We should first agree that we are not talking here about grossly contaminated water supply like that we would find anywhere far from civilization. In that case we would need a sure method for purifying a minimum quantity of water for sustenance for a limited time.

No, we are talking about the quality of plenty of water supply from city distribution systems. We want to improve upon that by removing bad taste and harmful contaminants that we know or suspect are present at the tap.

Typical in this respect is the presence of chlorine, a chemical added on purpose to water systems for removing the dangers of attacks from microorganisms, microbial pathogens, biological agents, germs and bacteria that could infect human beings and spread illness.

It should be understood that the killed agents remain in the water reaching the tap, together with the chemicals and other contaminants that where not removed.

The treated water may then be suitable for human consumption and not dangerous in the short term to healthy adults, although its effects in the long term are deemed risky for young children, pregnant women and elderly people by many professional authorities as reported hereafter.

You may wish to see the following document which advises just on that. It is titled "Consumer Guide to Water Filters" and is found at  http://www.nrdc.org/water/drinking/gfilters.asp

On three of the purification methods listed in this document I would like to add my comment, why I think they are not quite useful for Home application.

Distillation, entailing water boiling and condensation, is an energy intensive procedure producing pure distilled water that lacks minerals and good taste.

Reverse Osmosis requires energy to operate. The worst result however is that the system wastes a lot of water as a byproduct to be discarded, because it now contains the excess contaminants removed from the purified fraction.

Ultra Violet Disinfection, kills bacteria and microorganisms, but has no effect on minerals, heavy metals and chemicals.

Therefore it seems to me that the acceptable Water Purifiers left are those based on multiple level filters that get the job done satisfactorily if the water is not unduly charged with dangerous microorganisms.

Having done the first selection, how can one now look at more specific terms of comparison? They remain essentially performance and additional cost per unit of volume of treated water.

One potentially useful independent website that directly compares ten different suppliers is found at  http://www.waterfiltercomparisons.com/
Following the leads you may wish to check for yourself the results proposed.

The last important thing to check, is the trustworthiness of the suppliers. I believe that by comparing water purifiers offers with the above subjects in mind one has a good chance of homing on good products. I hope readers will agree and find the above guidelines useful.

Elia E. Levi is a retired engineer.

After researching the subject of drinking water quality and of home water filters and purifiers, he set up a website where he proposes the results of his inquiry for all to consider, to reach independently their conclusions.

Read more on the subject of this article by looking into Water Purifiers.

The most important part of a home water purification system is the water filter cartridge. You might think the mechanics of the system is more important, but the way I see it the mechanics or parts of the unit can be repaired or replaced, but if the water filter cartridge is defective and you don’t know it, you could be drinking contaminated water when you thought you were drinking safe water.

Or another thought is if you bought the water purification system because you thought the water filter cartridge was one that was removing all the dangerous contaminates from the water, and the cartridge only had the technology to remove a few of the toxic chemicals in our water supply you would be very disappointed to find out you bought the wrong unit.

There are many units on the market, that don’t remove the nasty things in our water. Take for example a reverse osmosis system. Unless the reverse osmosis system has additional filters in combination with the membranes used for the reverse osmosis process, you are only removing the minerals in the water.

There is controversy over leaving the minerals in or taking them out of the water. I actually believe the minerals are good for us, thus I don’t want to take them out. Taking the minerals out will change the water from alkaline to acidic, causing our bodies to pull the minerals from our teeth and bones to compensate for the minerals that are not in the water.

Also the more acidic products we put into our bodies the more our bodies will produce free radicals. Free radicals are linked to cancer, because cancer cells grow in an acid environment. I don’t know about you, but if drinking water with natural minerals in it will help protect me from cancer growing in my body, I want that kind of water. So leave the reverse osmosis systems in the store. They aren’t good for removing the other dangerous chemicals that are molecularly smaller than water anyway, such as pesticides and herbicides.

If a unit has only one type of water filter cartridge you can be sure it won’t filter out everything that needs to be filtered out. You need more than one media to filter the various contaminates in our water. The granular activated carbon filters out a lot of contaminates such as chlorine, but even with the carbon filter many dangerous chemicals get through the filter.

The best water purification unit to purchase is one with a carbon filter, a sub micron filter, a multi block filter and an ion exchange, to filter out the heavy metals like lead. All of these filters in combination make for the best water filter cartridge technology on the market today.

So don’t delay, check online today for a water purification that will protect you and your family from all dangerous elements in our water supply. Don’t be fooled for a minute and think that what comes straight out of your tap without filtering is contaminate free. Believe me when I say it is not.
