What Is Carbon Monoxide?

CO Carbon Monoxide is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Fifteen hundred people die annually due to accidental carbon monoxide exposure, and additional 10,000 seek medical attention. (Medical experts agree that it's difficult to estimate the total number of carbon monoxide incidents because the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning resemble so many other common ailments.)

Carbon monoxide is a flammable, colorless, odorless, tasteless toxic gas produced during incomplete combustion of fuel.

During normal combustion, each atom of carbon in the burning fuel joins with two atoms of oxygen - forming a harmless gas called carbon dioxide. When there is a lack of oxygen to ensure complete combustion of the fuel, each atom of carbon links up with only one atom of oxygen - forming carbon monoxide gas.

What Is The Danger?

Carbon monoxide inhibits the blood's capacity to carry oxygen. In our lungs, CO quickly passes into our bloodstream and attaches itself to hemoglobin (oxygen carrying pigment in red blood cells). Hemoglobin readily accepts carbon monoxide - even over the life giving oxygen atoms (as much as 200 times as readily as oxygen) forming a toxic compound known as carboxyhemoglobin (COHb).

By replacing oxygen with carbon monoxide in our blood, our bodies poison themselves by cutting off the needed oxygen to our organs and cells, causing various amounts of damage - depending on exposure.

Low levels of carbon monoxide poisoning (with COHb levels of 10%) result in symptoms commonly mistaken for common flu and cold symptoms - shortness of breath on mild exertion, mild headaches, nausea.

With higher levels of poisoning (COHb levels of 30%) the symptoms become more severe - dizziness, mental confusion, severe headaches, nausea, fainting on mild exertion.

At high levels (CHOb of 50% or more), there may be unconsciousness and death.

How Does CO Enter The Home?

Carbon monoxide can escape from any fuel-burning appliance, furnace, water heater, fireplace, woodstove, or space heater.

Any of these things can be very dangerous:

• A faulty furnace, maybe from mechanical failure
• A clogged fireplace from a bird's nest resting on top
• Water heaters, perhaps damaged in a flood
• A gas stove in your kitchen
• A faulty space heater
• A gas dryer that's not properly installed
• A grill used inside a garage during winter
• A car in the garage

Most newer homes are built very air-tight, thus cutting down on the supply of fresh air to your furnace - and creating an oxygen starved flame. Tight closing replacement windows and doors, as well as additional insulation can cause similar problems in older homes.

Carbon monoxide can spill from vent connections in poorly maintained or blocked chimneys. If the flue liner is cracked or deteriorated, CO can seep through the liner and into the house - slowly creeping up to dangerous levels. If a nest or other materials restrict or block the flue, CO will mostly spill back into the house.

Improperly sized flues connected to new high-efficiency furnaces and water heaters can also contribute to CO spillage. (Many new furnaces and water heaters are installed using the existing chimneys which may be the wrong size to allow the furnace to vent properly.)

Warming up vehicles in an attached garage, even with the garage door opened, can allow concentrated amounts of CO to enter your home through the car port door or near-by windows. Wind can also blow fumes back into the garage, and temperature differences between the indoors and outside can move CO back into your house or garage.

What To Do In A CO emergency

If you are suffering from chronic flu-like symptoms, see your doctor and ask her if it could be a low-level CO poisoning.

If you have a CO detector, and it alarms, open windows and ventilate your home with fresh air, have your heating system checked by a professional.

If your alarm sounds and you are feeling drowsy or dizzy, leave the house and call 911 from your neighbors' home. You may need medical attention for CO poisoning.

Home inspection can help

Having your home inspected each year at the beginning of the heating season can help avoid deadly carbon monoxide gas from leaking into your home, according to Chairman Ann Brown of the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

CO poisoning from the use of fuel burning appliances kills at least 200 people each year and sends more than 5,000 to hospital emergency rooms for treatment. Consumers can avoid this by having their fuel-burning appliances inspected by a qualified technician each year, and by purchasing and installing CO detectors.

Modern heating equipment is sophisticated and requires special training and tools for proper maintenance; consumers should not service their own appliances, but instead have a qualified professional perform an inspection.

A yearly inspection of your home by a professional should include a careful look at the following sources of carbon monoxide:

• Furnaces, hot water heaters and stoves. If they burn natural gas, heating oil, wood or other kinds of fuel, these appliances are potential sources of CO.
• Chimneys, flues and vents. Have flues and chimneys inspected before each heating season for leakage and for blockage by creosote or debris. Creosote buildup or leakage could cause black stains on the outside of the chimney or flue. These stains can mean that pollutants are leaking into the house. Have all vents to furnaces, water heaters or boilers checked to make sure they are not loose or disconnected.
• High Temperature Plastic Venting (HTPV) pipes, which are used in mid-efficiency appliances, may separate or crack. This could allow CO from the furnace to enter a home. Homeowners with a gas-fired mid-efficiency furnace or boiler installed between 1987 and 1993 should have them inspected for cracking or separating.
• Improper ventilation. Make sure that your appliances have adequate ventilation. A supply of fresh air is important to help carry pollutants up the chimney, stovepipe or flue, and is necessary for the complete combustion of any fuel.
• Finally, consumers should be aware that charcoal grills can also be a potential source of CO. Never use charcoal grills in enclosed spaces such as a home, garage, vehicle or tent, and never bring grills with live coals indoors after use. Never use charcoal grills as an indoor heat source.

Carbon monoxide is a deadly threat, but it can be avoided by having a yearly professional inspection of your home fuel burning appliances and by installing a CO detector that meets the most recent UL standards.

We all want clean water, but we don't always take the necessary steps to get it. Most municipal water sources do an acceptable job bringing untreated water up to an established code, but there are still contaminants, which can survive the treatment center process. Homeowners who seek cleaner, purer water often install their own filters to trap those contaminants before they reach the faucet or sink. These filters range in size from large, professionally installed units located near the main water pipes, to consumer-installed filters placed directly on faucets. All home water purifiers have a filter, which must be replaced on a regular basis.

Regardless of the type of water filter, replacing it should be simple. Save the packaging from your last filter. This should contain detailed instructions on the filter’s removal and replacement. In general, a larger unit will have a special compartment, which contains a cartridge-style filter. This filter collects and removes all sorts of contaminants, from bacteria to solid particulates of metal. It must be replaced with a new filter when it has reached maximum capacity. You should prepare the new filter as you open the compartment containing the old filter. Try not to handle the old filter without protective gloves. The filtered contaminants can make you sick. Have a waterproof container (plastic bag, trashcan, bucket, etc.) ready for the old filter. Follow the specific instructions that are included with the replacement filter. Allow some water to run through the filter in order to eliminate leftover contaminants and to prime the new filter. Do not drink the water that initially comes out of the tap after replacing the filter. After a few minutes, the water should be safe to drink.

Many consumers prefer the convenience or lower installation cost of a water filter attached directly to a faucet. Installing this type of filtering system is easy. Replacement filters are sold in department stores, hardware stores, home improvement centers, or online. These filters can be switched between an active and an inactive setting. While actively filtering tap water, an indicator strip will slowly change color. When the indicator strip reaches a saturation point, the consumer should replace the filter. Most of the time, this involves purchasing a new filter and then unscrewing the housing surrounding the old one. While it's important to know how to change a water filter, it's just as important to know when to change it. Changing a water filter too early can be costly, but waiting too long can lead to health problems and overall water quality issues. Filter manufacturers often suggest a specific timetable for changing out their products, but this schedule may be based on ideal conditions that are not present in your home. Some municipal water sources are naturally cleaner than others, so the same filtering system may perform differently depending on location and overall water quality.

Here are several methods to consider when replacing the filter in a home water filtering system:

1. The Calendar Method. Some consumers find it easiest to rely on the manufacturer's recommended replacement schedule. If a water filter is rated to last 6 months, for example, then the homeowner can mark a precise date on the calendar for replacing the newly installed cartridge. Mark the date of installation somewhere near the filter unit itself and then add the recommended date of replacement, whether it is a month or a year. Regardless of actual performance, replace the old filter promptly when that date arrives. Chances are the filter has reached its maximum effectiveness by this date and changing it regularly insures consistency.

2. The Indicator Method. Some water filters, especially those attached directly to faucets, have indicator strips, which change color when the filter has become significantly less effective. These indicators may not correspond with the number of calendar months suggested by the manufacturer, but they are usually accurate. Some water filter systems are affected by hot water flowing through the faucet; so be careful when switching from passive to active filtering mode. Once the indicator needs replacing, purchase a new filter as soon as possible.

3. The Performance Method. Some water filters perform well even months after their recommended change. Others may not last as long. Since replacement filters may be expensive, a homeowner may wait until the filter has definitely reached its maximum capacity. This is determined by informal performance tests. One test involves the time it takes to receive hot water through the tap. If all the household water runs through a professionally installed filtering system first, any significant lag time for hot water could indicate a clogged filter. When a filter becomes 50 or 60 percent clogged with contaminants, it may need immediate replacement. The water flowing through the filter becomes slower and slower, and takes longer for heated water to reach the tap.

Another performance gauge is the taste of the water. If you notice a significantly different taste in your filtered water, the water filter may have reached its limits. Municipal water treatment plants may introduce different levels of chlorine or other chemicals during different seasons, but an efficient water filter should keep the water consistent at the consumer's end. If the water becomes cloudy or has a disagreeable aftertaste, it may be time to replace your water filter regardless of the calendar month or the indicator readings.

As a beginner first learning the ins and outs of keeping an aquarium healthy, things can get a bit overwhelming. There is so much terminology and equipment, it is enough to make anyone's head spin. Learning it all a piece at a time is recommended. Patience is key in many things relating to keeping aquariums. A fish often recommended to beginners is the goldfish. Commonly available, and quite pretty when healthy, the goldfish is one of the easier fish to keep healthy and happy. Be prepared to do some reading, however. There are terms and procedures to become familiar with.

The aquarium is absolutely critical to being able to keep healthy fish, no matter what kind of fish it is. Proper care and maintenance of your aquarium is necessary, and there are daily and weekly procedures that must be followed. The first step in keeping a goldfish is choosing the aquarium. While you may see goldfish in bowls and other small containers on television and even in real life, this is really a bad idea. While a goldfish can live for a while in a small bowl like that, they will never really thrive, and will be more susceptible to disease and death. A 10 gallon minimum aquarium with filtration should be the minimum you consider for keeping a goldfish. The filter running into the aquarium agitates the surface of the water and provides more oxygen to the water, which in turn means the fish has plenty of oxygen and is healthier. More room to swim, and even some currents from the filtration, make sure that the goldfish stays happy and in shape. Don't forget to take the number of goldfish into account! More than one goldfish will require more space.

Ask the guys at your local pet store or aquarium shop (recommended) what they recommend. Don't buy too much tank at first though. Try to keep it small and simple. Tell them how many fish you intend to keep, and whether you would like to add fish later. Always do some research before buying a product you are not familiar with. There are a ton of accessories and products associated with aquariums and fish. Doing some research beforehand can keep you from buying products you don't need.

Unless you have access to well water, your tap water probably contains chlorine or ammonia. These substances are very harmful to your goldfish, and can even kill them if you have particularly chlorinated water. There are products available that you simply mix thoroughly into your tap water after filling the aquarium. They usually remove chlorine as well as adding things to the water to help your fish form its slime coat and fight off ick (a small parasite that is extremely common on fish that are stressed). If you would rather use distilled or reverse osmosis purified water, there are other additives that restore needed minerals into these too-pure waters.

Make sure you check the filters once a week, and rinse them out with dechlorinated water of some type. It is okay to use distilled water for this. It is common to get snails living on your filters. Try not to crush them, and remove them during your weekly cleaning. It is not recommended that you put these types of snails back into your aquarium, because they tend to over-breed and eat every bit of plant matter in your aquarium.

It is also necessary to keep the aquarium at a fairly constant temperature. An aquarium heater can be used to control the water temperature with some precision. You should also have an aquarium thermometer to verify the water temperature.

GE reverse osmosis water filters use reverse osmosis technology to filter water for drinking. These filters require a semi-permeable membrane to catch any organisms that would otherwise come out of your tap. The filter can only catch substances that are large enough to be caught in the membrane, and smaller particles will still make it through.

GE reverse osmosis filters can filter up to 15 gallons per day. Unfortunately it takes many more gallons to make that filtered water, with up to 10 unfiltered gallons per filtered gallon!
