All of the above items will not give you distilled water. Distilled water is 99.9% pure and uses heat, evaporation, and condensation to remove any water contaminates (just like the earth’s water cycle). The Faucet filters, pitcher filter, and stage filters use filter media, such as carbon, to clean/polish drinking water. These filtering products reduce CTO (chlorine taste and odor) and a few other contaminates such as lead, cryptosporidium, and giardia cysts. Water purification technology has advanced beyond this method, as well, and has also become more affordable.  RO systems for the whole house cost in excess of several thousand dollars, not to mention the cost of wasted water and the electricity needed to pressurize the water.  Some models may be much cheaper and not use electricity.  This is not the best choice for the home

Pitcher Filters

The idea of portable inexpensive methods of water purification has made pitcher and carafe-style filters increasingly popular in recent years.  Although it took more advanced water purification technology to develop pitcher filters, they are not the most effective.  Pour through filters are a slight improvement over tap water, because they do block a lot of the chlorine, but they cannot block other chemical contaminants, nor can they remove bacterial cysts.  They can filter out lead, which is a good thing.  They do cost less initially, but because the filters must be replaced so often, they cost more to use than a countertop or under the counter filter.

Multi-media Block and Activated Carbon Filters

Activated carbon is recognized by the EPA as the best water purification technology available today for the removal of chlorine and its by-products, pesticides and other synthetic chemicals.  The chemicals are bound to the surface of the filter medium and cannot pass through with the water.  Multi-media block filters remove sediments and bacterial cysts, while balancing the mineral content and pH levels of your tap water.

Prepare your home for a safe and quick recovery from hip replacement surgery

 

After hip surgery there are things you can do to help make your recovery easier and safer.

 Getting in and out of the car can be a painful and laborious process because it requires some twisting and turning as well as lifting the affected leg. The first time you'll be getting in the car is when leaving the hospital or skilled nursing center. A car swivel seat is a really great help for easing in and out of the car with a minimum of twisting. A handy bar device also gives you something sturdy to hold on to. Have these items in your car at the time you leave the hospital if at all possible. They can be ordered on the internet and only take a couple of days to receive.

 Before coming home the house should be free of loose throw rugs, including the bath mats in the bathroom. Speaking of which, we all know many accidents happen in the bathroom. After hip surgery you may need a bench in the shower and some temporary grab bars. Depending on the size of the shower door opening you might want a bench seat that swivels to get you legs in the door. Also, a raised toilet seat with side rails, that attach to the bowl is a real necessity in order to avoid too much bending of the affected hip. In the shower, a long handled sponge is great for washing the feet as well as your back.Getting dressed will be a little tricky for the first few weeks after surgery. Use aids like a long-handled shoe horn and a grabbing tool or reacher to put on shoes and socks so as not to bend over too far.  Set up a central place where you can be comfortable when not resting in bed. Get an arm chair that has a firm, higher than normal seat cushion, or a riser. This is safer, more comfortable than a low, soft chair and easier to push up out of. Make sure your cane or walker is within easy reach. Have a table within reach with a pitcher of water, a glass, tissues, waste paper basket the TV remote, telephone and reading material. If you are not near the toilet, a urinal might also come in very handy to help avoid accidents. 

In the bedroom, also have the above items on a nightstand as well as any required medication. A bicycle horn comes in real handy to honk for help from you caregiver. Unless you live in a mansion, it can be heard all over the house. 

If you find your recovery is taking a little longer than expected ( as we did) and you are using a wheelchair, don't forget to get a temporary handicapped parking sticker. This is really a godsend for the caregiver who is lifting the chair in and out of the car. 

If you follow these helpful hints, you should be reasonably independent and on the way to a speedy recovery. Make sure that you do not push yourself harder than what you doctor or physical therapists recommends but don't slack off either.

How to remove a stain from a stainless steel counter top?

I used a strong chemical called the Works on my stainless steel countertop by accident and know its got dark ugly marks on it. Please any tips?

I doubt the marks can be removed, as they are not just on the surface. Check at Lowe's or Home Depot for a stainless steel cleaner. That is probably your only hope. Sorry.

Choosing Kitchen Countertops

The kitchen countertop has to be able to take a lot of abuse including the heat of pots, cutting from knives and the use of abrasive cleansers. The ideal countertop should be able to stand up to heat and the sharp edge of a knife.

If money is no object, then almost anyone would go for a solid granite kitchen countertop- a natural stone, granite is a popular choice for its classic beauty and durability. Granite is the hardest and densest of the natural stones. It can create a kitchen countertop that is extremely scratch resistant and can keep its luster longer than most other materials. Also, keep in mind that acidic foods and liquids, such as orange juice, may stain the surface if left sitting for very long.

Since concrete is extremely heavy, you may need to add additional support of the floor underneath the countertop to support the additional weight. Your contractor or architect should check this out before ordering the counter. All in all, a concrete countertop will give you years of elegant and durable service.

If you like the professional restaurant kitchen looks, then you might want to consider stainless steel countertops. Then you can pretend that you are a master chef in the kitchen!
