I am a student who can afford to spend very much money on a prototype of a water filter, which the shell is basically just stainless steel and steel mesh. How do I find someone to create one? And how would I manufacture them on a slightly larger scale? (100/per year)

The Truth About Drinking Water Filters

Home drinking water filters allow us to say “no†to the expensive and wasteful plastic bottles that are adding to the pollution problems on our planet.  Many environmental groups are protesting our growing dependence on bottled H2O and suggesting a drinking water filter for the home as a safe and economical alternative.

You might have a lack or respect for environmentalists.  Some people do.  But, how do you feel about doctors?

Health care professionals are recommending that their patients use drinking water filters, because of all the chemical and biological contaminants that cannot be removed by the public utilities.  Research has shown that chlorination protects us from outbreaks of cholera and typhoid, but increases our risk of developing cancer in later life. So, chlorine is one thing that you want to block, but there are other problems.

When chlorine is used as a disinfectant, it combines with biological matter (bacteria, parasites, algae, etc.) and forms other compounds, referred to as THMs.  The EPA limits the amount that can be present in public supplies, but the level grows and grows as it sits in the tanks and travels through the pipes.  So, by the time it reaches your home, the level will be much higher than what the treatment facility’s tests say.

A drinking water filter that blocks THMs might cost a little more, initially, but it’s worth the investment.  The compound causes numerous health problems and has been linked to cancer in several large scale studies.  Breast cancer, in particular, is believed to be related to THM, because levels are much higher in women who have the disease, than in women who don’t.

In some areas, MTBE contamination is a problem.  Of the top 10 rated drinking water filters, only two remove MTBE.  The chemical is primarily used as a no-knock gas additive.  It got into the ground when older underground tanks began to leak and through spills at stations.  What is in the ground eventually ends up in the reservoir.  Treatment centers can do nothing to remove this compound.

Another problem; the cryptosporidium parasite is resistant to chlorination, particularly during its cyst phase of life.  A good drinking water filter will remove the cysts before they can be ingested and become a parasitic infection.  The symptoms of the infection are similar to stomach flu, although diarrhea is sometimes violent and extreme.  An infection of this type can kill a small child or an adult with health problems.  Most of us can fight it off, but why take the risk?

What else? Pesticides and herbicides commonly used in this country also end up in the reservoirs.  Do you really want to drink something that was created to kill plants and bugs?  Not even your pets should be exposed to that health risk.  If you want to be safe, look for a drinking water filter that removes atrazine and benzene.  Those are the two most commonly used products in this country.

You have to drink something.  You have to replenish your bodily fluids.  The least expensive and safest choice is to invest in the best drinking water filters that you can find.  The contaminants mentioned here are only a few drops in the bucket.

Limestone is a sedimentary rock formed by the cementing together of naturally accumulated rock fragments and organic sediments via a chemical process in shallow prehistoric marine environments. Limestone varies in degrees of hardness, the densest stones can be polished to a very high gloss finish. Limestone is less resistant than most igneous rocks, but more resistant than most other sedimentary rocks. The most common colors are beige, gray, white, yellow and brown. Limestone is readily available and relatively easy to cut into blocks or more elaborate carving. Limestone is quite durable, and with proper installation and maintenance some types can perform extremely well, even in high traffic areas

Marble

Marble is a metamorphic, crystalline rock formed by the intrusion of an igneous rock into a limestone mass, is a nonfoliated metamorphic rock resulting from the metamorphism of limestone. The heat and pressure of such an event alters the original molecular structure of the calcite present in the limestone and causes re-crystalization of the calcite and the formation of new minerals. The result is marble with much appreciated, characteristics of heavy veining and wide range of colors. Quartzite

The nearly pure silica content of the rock provides little to form soil from and therefore the quartzite ridges are often bare or covered only with a very thin soil and little vegetation. Often they rock has a granular appearance on a weathered surface, but along a broken surface the sand grains are usually split. Also, unlike most of the nondescript rocks, quartzite has a glassy luster.

Travertine

Travertine is sedimentary rock, composed almost entirely of calcium carbonate, formed by the accumulation of calcium carbonate deposited by hot springs. Travertine is distinguished from other sedimentary rocks by its "spongy" texture and large number of holes, varying in size and shape. Travertine colors are usually light ivory and beige, but impurities and iron compounds found in the stone are responsible for the creation of reds, yellows and dark brown colors. Travertine is durable and performs well in all types of applications but must be properly sealed and maintained. The distinctive holes may be filled or left natural ?unfilled? according to its proposed application desired aesthetic appeal.

Slatestone

Slate is a fine grained metamorphic rock formed from clay, sedimentary rock shale and sometimes quartz. The availability of slate in various colors including gray, black, brown, green, red, or purple makes it further suitable for commercial use such as blackboards, flagstone, and roofing tiles. Slate is a hard stone but brittle which will break easy into smooth slabs,which can be made into roofing slates, also called roofing shingles.They are often used for interior and exterior flooring or wall cladding. Tiles are installed and set on mortar and grouted along the edges.

Sealants are often used on tiles to improve durability and appearance, increase stain resistance, reduce efflorescence, and increase or reduce surface smoothness.Generally, tabletops for the best pool tables are made of slate.

Sandstone

Sandstone is a sedimentary rock composed mainly of sand-size mineral or rock grains. Sandstone comes in many colors but the most common are brown, gray, tan, yellow, red, and white,which makes it further suitable for domestic and commercial use. Owing to its architectural properties and natural beauty ,sandstone is used for interior as well as exterior decoration. It is used to pave floors, clad walls and a wide range of handcrafted products like sculptures, frames, furniture, jewelry boxes, stands, garden ornaments, flower vases and many other decorative items. Sandstone when laid as building stone gives one of the most magnificent look.

Basalt

Basalt is an igneous rock, formed during volcanic eruptions from the hot lava coming out of a volcano. Basalt is very dark in color that is made of many dark colored minerals such as pyroxene and olivine. Basalt also contains some light colored minerals such as feldspar and quartz, but the amounts are small. Typically, you can't see most of the mineral crystals without using a microscope because quick cooling prevents large crystals from forming. The strange of Basalt is its vesicular and natural, seeing from its cutting surface , the holes are much bigger in the upper and smaller downwards and more highly concentrated. This kind of stone material has the special features which other stone material doesn't have for its individual holes, such as sound absorption and insulation, heat insulation and reserve, frozen proof etc. It has good sightseeing for the continuous big and small holes, with primitive simplicity and elegant style. Every environmental test of this stone is all fine under very strict inspections, it is green environmental building material. It also has features of sour and alkali proof, can be used in many areas. Like other stones, basalt is an age-old material, probably best known to most of us in the form of cobblestone paving of roads and pathways.

im looking to buy a brita water filter for my kitchen sink, i dont know a whole lot about them and was wondering if it was worth the money? if so, how often do you change the filter??

Yes, very much worth it. We have one, the filters last a long time. I will have to dig out the manual to see how often to change.

It is like bottled water on demand. Save a few of the empty bottles, the better ones, and fill from the Brita. Don't fill too full, throw them in the freezer and you will have iced bottle water on demand. Just grab and go.

It is well worth it.

We also have a Brita water pitcher my fiance carries with her to work. She is a caregiver and she can filter any water anywhere.

Everyone does.

 

It’s just that there are some water treatment products that are simply a waste of money and others that don’t protect your health.

Let me help you learn what to look for.

 

The best home water treatment systems are multi-stage devices that remove a wide range of contaminants, but “selectively†filter, so as to not destroy the healthy mineral content.

Reverse osmosis and distillation do not remove any chemical contaminants, but they do remove minerals.

So, mark those two off your list.

You have probably seen them in stores and on TV.

The pitchers are very inexpensive to purchase, but the filters have a short life span, so the cost per gallon is pretty high.

 

Also, you should know that those pitchers only reduce chlorine by 75% and lead by 93%. There is no safe level of consumption for lead, no matter what anyone says.

It’s a toxic metal that builds up in our bodies over time and causes chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, Alzheimer’s and osteoporosis.

 

Water treatment products should reduce lead by more than 99% and they can if they include an ion exchange step.

When it comes to chlorine reduction, you want the same thing; more than 99% reduction and it can be done with granulated carbon and multi-media blocks.

So, you can mark that one off your list, too.

They are highly advertised and apparently popular, but the cost per gallon is only a little less than Brita and there are some chemicals that they don’t remove.

It smells bad and tastes bad.

But, there’s another chemical that has no odor or taste. It’s always present when chemical disinfectants are used and it causes cancer.

 

It is sometimes referred to as a disinfection byproduct.

Sometimes they call it trihalomethane or THM for short.

PUR does not remove it.

In fact, there are many cancer causing chemicals that PUR water treatment products do not remove.

 

Certain contaminants must be targeted with specialized filtering media in order to reduce their presence.

 

That is why you need a multi-media block in combination with granulated carbon, because all of these chemicals are commonly present in our surface and groundwater.

 

But, don’t worry. Home water treatment systems that include all the right steps are affordable.

For the kitchen counter, you can get water treatment products that include them for less than the cost of buying a six week supply of bottled water.

The major manufacturers use municipally supplied tap water.

Under Counter Water Filter - Part of a Workable, Pleasing Family Kitchen

If your household is anything like mine, then your kitchen is the hub of the majority of family activity. The clutter created by counter-top appliances, food, dishes, drinking glasses, school books, papers, etc., can make it difficult to enjoy a pleasing, workable kitchen. That's why I took an important step toward clearing the clutter by installing an under counter water filter. It’s one less item on my counter-top that I have to continually fuss with.

Water purification has always been a priority in our home. In the beginning, it was because we didn't like the taste and smell of the water that came out of our tap.

After spending a fortune on bottled water delivery, I began to research home water treatment systems. There were so many water filtration products on the market I needed to dig deeper before I pulled out my wallet.

There were plenty of under counter water filter systems, as well as counter-top, shower and whole house appliances. Some were based on reverse osmosis, while others were utilized a water distillation process.

I didn't want another appliance sitting on my kitchen counter, so I narrowed my search to under counter water filters.

But I needed to do more research to find the best filtration process for my under counter water filter.

That's when I discovered that pleasant tasting water was the least of my worries. I learned that water pollution is more than an interesting topic that is covered in the nightly news.

The Ralph Nader Study Group issued a report after completing an assessment of over 10,000 documents secured through the Freedom of Information Act. This comprehensive review verified that "U.S. drinking water contains more than 2,100 toxic chemicals that can cause cancer."

I also learned that reverse osmosis and distillation has some handicaps when it came to filtering out certain contaminants. The size of the molecules that make up certain organic chemicals means they can make it through the filtering process and into your water.

Just so you know, this deficiency can be fixed with the addition of a carbon filter. However, I didn't want to have to purchase another appliance to support the under counter water filter appliance. More clutter (not to mention, more expense and hassle...)!

After looking at all the different under counter water filters, and learning about their advantages and disadvantages, I finally settled upon a multi-stage filtration under counter water filter.

Multi-stage filtration is an up-and-coming technology that filters out a large majority of chemical toxins, odor-causing sediments, and high levels of chlorine.
